But, would it be possible (using only app-store SDK APIs) and then using map data from e.g. OpenStreetMap to produce a turn-by-turn app that meets every published criteria for an iPhone app store app other than the specific restriction against turn-by-turn?
And could such an app then be run on jail-broken iphones?

Also, has apple ever given any reasoning for why they have banned turn-by-turn? (My guess is that its because carriers can't charge for turn-by-turn on the iPhone in the way that they can on all the Nokia and other phones with turn-by-turn)

The free xGPS 1.2 provides turn-by-turn, voicedirection, just released a few days ago. But this is made with the free Toolchain.

G-Map (from Xroad) is in the app store right now. They had turn-by-turn and vectormaps but this version got rejected by Apple. So they had to strip turn-by-turn and voice (and other stuff). Cause they had an app redy for the app store they must have used the official SDK.
