i wanted to build an app for the app store and was wondering if it was possible to view the code of existing apps for reference. If so, how can i do it?

thanks,ill take a look at that. So there's no way to get the code for current apps. I cant get it off my iphone and view it in sdk?

Ha ! Fortunately not. We would lose a lot of money if the code was allowed to be seen. You cannot view the code unless it is released by the developer/copyright holder. Although, I think there is an app in the link I gave that is still on the AppStore. I can't remember which one it is though.
