don't know about login as root, it's generally a bad idea to enable root as a login under OSX. If you do have elevated privileges, getting "Permission denied" makes no sense. The typical way to get elevated privileges in OSX is to use "sudo"

Without the exact error messages together with the command, I can only guess.

Using your G4 booted into 9 will most likely not work. The intel OSX disks will be formated GPT and I don't think OS9 will understand GPT disk format.

i still get this f*** prohibited sign...

what is the easy solution for using the external drive not only one time?
do i need to delete the *.kext after every boot?
is the atvosx patch still available or not?

i tested the guide step by step and i was able to do everything without problem except patching the AppleFileSystem.mkext file.

the problem seems to be the patching of the above file.
has anybody a patched file?

i patched it with TextWrangler and it is not working. i will try some other methods...

(i also used a PATA 3,5" on USB case with external power supply)

I'm using a macmini intel to install osx tiger (from macmini "recovery" dvd)
Small installation and only 1 big partition (80Gb)
Tiger updated to 10.4.8 with combo (no other update installed)

I've modified AppleFileSystem with textwrangler (i only added that info, not replaced anything).
I can't find atvosx file (it's incomplete on every t0rr3nt resource)

I've used 2 different boot.efi (1 found on t0rr3nt, the other on OSBoot 2.0 by Apple).

One question:
i've to receive confirm when i do "sudo bless", after typing root password?

What can i do to see osx working on my appletv without opening the case?

It has to be in the root folder of the drive.

@CH1CC0: If you the prohibited sign, try to use different boot.efi, eg from AppleTV OS 2.1 or even 1.1. Don't forget to "chown 755" and "chmod root:wheel" it. Then bless the file. Check/correct the permissions of your mach_kernel as well.

Boot with verbose mode to see, where the kernel hangs. Normally there is some output about the non-working kexts, if there's a kernel panic.

Did you add the new partition type to the AppleFileSystem.kext/Contents/Info.plist? Use nano or vi to add it. Some people say that with TextEdit it doesn't work!

/System/Library/Caches/*
/Library/Caches/*
~/Caches/*
/System/Library/Extensions.mkext

Do you use the right kernel for SSE2/SSE3?

ALWAYS use minimal kexts on first install/boot. Important are ata/sata, graphics and ethernet. All other kexts can be added if the first start was successful.

it is not about boot.efi

i did it many times and i was allways able to boot many times with the appletv boot.efi already installed and anything done without editing the applefilesystem.kext

after editing the file with the appletv filesystem i was not able to boot more than one time...

anyway, has anybody the needed files in an already patched version?
i would like to get osx working but i did not manage it by myself

how do i "chown 755" and "chmod root:wheel" because this is not mentioned in the guide and i did not do that. i did check the read/write access via finder and it was as the original file...
