I have tried this a couple of times and still get stuck at the gray apple screen followed by the circle slash screen and the spinning wheel. I have a couple of questions regarding the instructions and would appreciate any help from you guys that have gotten this to work.
1) Get ethernet working with PCGenRTL8139Ethernet 1.2.0 STEP: Do we just need to follow the instructions under "(A). the risk takers approach" or do we have to complete the steps located under the "(B). Piano, piano"?
2)Install proper kernel STEP: Do we need to use the "sudo cp" command to copy the new mach_kernel to the volume or just Finder?
3) Install boot.efi STEP: Do we need to use Terminal.app to complete this or just use Finder and run the bless in Terminal.app?
4) Cleanup STEP: when I delete the /Volumes/YourExternalDisk/System/Library/Extensions.mkext and Extensions.kextcache if they exist, the Extensions.mkext reappears almost instantly? Is that suppose to happen?
I appreciate any help with these questions - not sure how clean they are to you guys. Also, if someone has been using the OSX on the apple TV how usable is it given the low memory present on the ATV?
I had OSX on an external usb drive. It worked so far. The only things that didn't work were WLAN, graphics and sound ;-)
The problem with the graphics card is, that there are no working drivers, so you can't change the resolution. Additionally the you can't get rid of the overscan, that means, the screenborders (e.g menubar) are not visible.
The speed is quite acceptable, at least for surfing the web.
To answer your questions:
1. just download the kext, extract it and copy it to your /System/Library/Extensions/
in terminal run: sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/PCGenRTL... --> enter the full kext name
then run: sudo -R /System/Library/Extensions.*
you can try to: sudo kextload <path to the pcgen.. kext> --> this should work, no errors
2. I think you can copy the kernel with finder, but if the instructions tell you to use terminal, then use it.
3. the same as above
4. Asap you delete Extensions.mkext or .kextcache, it will be recreated. So no problem here.
THanks for responding back, I will give it another try.
Ive got it booted finally in 10.4.8
But the colours are all off, and its cropped around the edges. Is this being caused by my screen or output settings? If I do screen share the colours look fine.
The cropped image (overscan) and the strange colors are caused by the lack of a working display driver.
And this problem most certainly never be solved.
I am unable to modify the boot.efi on my 2.5 external drive.
I have tried in the finder.
I have tried in Terminal even under root ( not sudo ).
I have unlocked permissions on the new and old boot.emi.
And I have Checked the Ignore Permissions on the external drive.
I have tried with the computer booted and with the external drive booted.
I have tried with both a G5 and my Macbook under Leopard.
I will try using 10.4 on the PowerPC.
When I use the cp command, I get the message Permission denied or something like that.
Any help appreciated.
Lewis
try a little "sudo" action in front of your copy command.
Thanks for prompt reply.
Well, I am signed in as root. Isn't this better than sudo?
I will try sudo again.
If this fails, I think I can do it under os9 if I can get my G4 booted into 9.
Lewis
Well sudo or root will not get me past the "not permitted" message.
And OS9 does not recognize my USB2 drive.
So any ideas?
And why me when no one else has had this problem?
