I just got a MacBook and Apple TV so I would be installing Leopard using these instructions. Can anyone comment on the success of what I'm attempting? I saw a few posts about regular boots not working unless files are deleted. If this is installed successfully, will it boot normally? I have Boxee installed so I'm already able to SSH into the ATV. Talk to me...

bumpage... trying to get Leopard to work too.

i heard reports that the kalyway 10.5.2 disc works.... im trying with a retail disc and the voodoo 9.5.0 kernel (which has sse3 emulator built in).

    first attempt:

installed leo to usb drive on mbp, updated to 10.5.5, disabled Finder, Dock, Spotlight, added Front Row as login item - tested booting on mbp, booted straight into FR. nice. changed to the appletv's GUID partition identifier thingy - on the AppleTV it just hung on the grey screen.

    second attempt:

as above, except removed nvidia kexts, added dsmos.kext and booted verbose. lots of weird errors, was too late to actually take them in

    third attempt:

installed leo 10.5.0 (again to usb drive via macbook pro, using retail 10.5.0 disc). will install voodoo kernel and system.kext, appletv boot.efi etc. about to try it out

cant get this to work at all.

end up with messages along the lines of:

kextd[9]: IOKitWaitQuiet() timed out waiting to write kernel symbols.
configd[32]: InterfaceNamer: timed out waiting for IOKit to quiesce

after about 10 mins or so it seems to move on a bit and i get:

loginwindow[22]: Folder Manager is being asked to create a folder.. (cant see the rest of this line, it goes off the telly).

    Default some success

turns out voodoo 9.5.0 doesnt seem to want to boot on an appletv. i used an older sse2 leo kernel and got it booting. unf. the composite kext hadnt kicked in, so everything was b&w. also, i'd removed Dock and Finder and set Front Row as a startup item. however, the screen faded to black and stayed black. I wonder if it thinks the TV output is a secondary screen.

am going to reinstate Dock and Finder and boot up and try to get a bit further.

ok, so i can boot with the usb hdd hooked into the appletv. i need to use my usb keyboard and mouse, but the atv wont boot from usb if the drive is hooked to the hub.

any ideas? someone else must've solved this one surely?

ok, turns out my damn usb hub was fux0rd. heh. will try again once i pick up a new one.

EDIT: absolutely nobody seems to care. wonder why. imho the atv would be an ideal device if it ran leo (so it could host its own itunes library, run front row, run eyetv + pyetv plugin, play DVDs via USB drive)...

    problems i need to solve:

    - audio, which i suspect isn't as impossible as some seem to think, and there are limited reports of it working with applehdapatcher
    - wifi (i think this should work ootb, i think i deleted one too many kexts )
    - composite colour - the kext which works for atvos doesnt seem to work in leo. might need to recompile it under XCode in Leo or something.

i guess most people will think 256Mb isnt enough to run Leopard usefully, and who knows, maybe thats true. my approach is to disable Spotlight and remove Finder and Dock. we shall see, i guess.

I'm interested as well. I once tried to get leopard running but I always ended up with an unbootable usb drive. I tried several kernels but none seemed to work.

I achieved to run tiger 10.4.10 with wifi. But though there were no graphics and sound drivers, I stopped trying.

It would be greate if you'd get graphics and sound working. I'd like to try this myself, but at the moment I don't have any time left.

    Question

    Hi to all ppl,
Good guide... but i have some problems...

I'have installed osx 10.4.10 on usb stick, the only difference with the guide is not remove o NV* extensions...
The first boot on apple tv go ok, with sound, with video... i can't say if all extensions are load because system profile crash.

After the first boot there's no way to boot again in osx, always error on boot.

    Any advice?

My objective is play osx with any software like "Remote Buddy" or "Sofa Control".

    Tnx a lot
    Cya in the cyberspace!
