It's fairly simple - you need to share the folders with your media files, then add them to XBMC.

To share in Vista, you need to right click the folder you want to share, click "Share", add the appropriate users (either add "Guest" or everyone from the dropdown menu) and click "Share". If you're trying to share an entire drive, such as an external HD or flash drive, when you right click and click share, you'll need to click "Advanced Sharing", tick the "Share this folder" box, give the share a name and click OK.

Once you've got your share set up, run XBMC on your ATV, browse to either Music or Videos and choose add source. In the window that opens, choose to browse from the right, then choose "Windows network (SMB)". It should bring up your windows network - most likely "WORKGROUP" unless you've done something special. Browse to your network & find the folder where your music or video is stored. You'll actually need to open the folder in XBMC, then select "OK" below the file browser in XBMC. This will fill in the share location on the add source dialogue - if you want to give this share a particular name, you can edit it at the bottom of the window, then click okay.

That should put that share in your list on either Music or Video. From there, you should be able to choose it from the menu when you enter either section, browse the files and play them.

When i get to the point of browsing on xbmc and clicking on windows network (smb) it brings up an error message saying "error 2: share not available" even tho i have followed the steps...how annoying. Do you have any ideas??

Also i dont know if this will help. I cant install addons either. When i try to it tells me "remote share, network is not connected" ive checked my internet and its fine and everything else on apple tv can access the internet. I feel i may be out of my depth!

    Tip i just worked out.
Avi files tend to be buffering alot but mkv files work great (unless its 1080 which buffering starts again)
Handbrake converts to mkv very fast so all avi work flawless.
