    Default What is "Tethered" Jailbreaking?

I'm one of those idiots who upgraded their ATV2 software before realizing it's more difficult to hack that way. Now I keep hearing I can only do "tethered" jailbreaking. What exactly does that mean?

you can jailbreak it but you must boot using USB connected to re-jailbreak it. In other words, the jailbreak will not survive a reboot or power cycle.

Does it need to be tethered to a computer everytime it goes to sleep and wakes up or just when it is unplugged or restarted?

it means that there is only a temp solution untill the full Jb comes out.

So it is a fix but when you power it down or put it in sleep mode you will need to plug it to the pc to re JB it and boot...

Untethered version is that you can boot and reboot it and it always stays in JB mode..

Sorry to be an idiot, but with tethered jailbreaking, you have to tether even after the device just goes to sleep on its own after not being used for 30 min (or whatever the sleep settings are)?

I've not used the ATV2 jailbreak, but for every other device, the tether is only required when the device is restarted or the battery goes flat (no battery in ATV2)

This is slightly misguided advice, I've heard nothing about sleep mode requiring tether (on any device)
Also, there is high chance that there won't be an untethered solution for 4.2.1 (except for those with 4.2b3 or 4.1 SHSH saved)

ok so lets clear this up..lol

    Definition Of Tethered Jailbreak
The concept of tethered jailbreak is – your iPhone requires to be connected with your computer everytime, whenever you need to reboot your iPhone or simply your iPhone loses the battery charge. Well it is not for re-jailbreak or restore your iPhone but only for the back up of your iPhone as an aid of jailbreak application.

How to boot your iPhone on Tethered Jailbreak(or ATV2G)
Connect your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, atv) to your computer
Relaunch the same jailbreaking application what you have used to jailbreak the device
Select the “Just boot tethered right now” option (ie- in redsn0w) (shown in the screenshot above)
Now the your iOS device will boot with the aid of redsn0w
After successful booting disconnect it from your computer
    And use it as usual

    Definition Of Untethered Jailbreak
Well, the untethered jailbreak is most preferable, because it requires no connection to your computer except for the initial jailbreaking process. You can reboot your iOS device as much as you want without having to tether it to your computer to boot.

This is how most of the new jailbreaking tool works for iOS 4.1 and prior, like greenpois0n, PwnageTool, limera1n, and sn0wbreeze.

    OK?

I find it was worth updating the ATV IOS..

personally wait for the full JB to come out.for now tuff it out ..
i even paid for firecore Atvflash but i cant even use it..

    sooooooonnnnnn ...

The most impressive component of atvflash is the Plex client. That's open source, freely available and works just fine on the latest firmware. A tethered jailbreak can be a source of significant irritation, particularly if you can't easily connect a computer to your atv2 in order to boot it. However once booted the need to subsequently reboot should be rare as iOS is pretty reliable and being unix you can start/restart processes and services via a command shell. Sleep does NOT require a tethered boot, however you may choose to disable sleep completely as jailbroken atv's can sometimes have a habit of forgetting their wifi config when they sleep.
