I am trying to cobble together a small network of low-cost servers to act as a grid of compute nodes. This led me to search for the lowest cost, feature rich hardware. The AppleTV2 seems to fit the build. It is inexpensive and reasonably powerful.
In terms of interfaces, I think it is fitted out quite well. 100Mbps ethernet and WiFi for networking, bluetooth for keyboard/mouse, hdmi for the screen. This is all that is needed for a small server or even a basic desktop or network terminal.
The ATV2 fits my needs if it had an operating system which I could put general purpose software on. I think it also fits a bunch of other low end scenario's.
I can get an ATV2 for about $100. With Linux on board this would give me 8GB of local storage, 512MB ram (ATV3), single core A5 (ARM cortex A9), powervr graphics and power supply. Seems like a bargain to me.
Do you know of any other hardware with this kind of spec at this price point or below?
