ATV3 Jailbreak

i was thinking of buying ATV3 will i be able to jailbreak like ATV2

Can I stream my movies from my hard drive to the Apple TV? I have all my movies on a hard drive and am currently using the Western Digital Media Player to play them. Any ideas before upgrading to the Apple TV?

I currently use a WDTVLive and it works great mostly. I purchased a refurb Apple TV2 a few months ago. Finally got around to trying it out and it beats the pants off the WD for user interface/access to Youtube/etc.

The problem with the ATV2 is that as standard it will only play what is in your iTunes library (MP4 video) or what you purchase from Apple to stream. You cannot just stream DivX/MKV/xvid/etc. from a shared drive. :(

To watch any video format from your shared volume/NAS/Server, you will need to Jailbreak the ATV2 so that you can install XBMC (or similar video player) and then you can watch ALL your media stored on NAS/server whatever. You still can use the ATV2 as normal, but you will now be able to launch XBMC to play all the formats like you do with the WD.

Seems a good idea. But for me as a computer klutz, I even have on idea how to jailbreak my ATV2. So, I have to google a video convert tool to help me convert any video file to MP4 for iTunes and ATV. Fortunately, everything is ok. I can enjoy all the videos on my HDTV after syning the converted files to ATV2. By the way, the 3r party tool Brorsoft Video Converter is the pro I'm using now. And I think it can also help you to solve the problem for ATV3, since the ATV3 cannot be hacked till this moment.

Not for awhile, perhaps quite a long while. The ATV3 apparantly is a much tougher nut to crack than it's predecessors.

Right now the only way to manage is is to get your movies imported into iTunes. With itunes open, you can either direct it to output on the ATV from iTunes itself or pick them up from ATV if you have sharing enabled.

That's the only way I use my AppleTV 3 now, as an expensive wireless cable.
My 1st Gen ATV is my main movie and MP3 player for now.....
