I have just bought a ATV 2G black. I would like install Perian to read .avi (divx, xvid...).
I transfered files but that don't work...

It's possible with ATV 2G black iOS 4.1 to read other movie type ?

You will be waiting quite a long time for this.

Perian will likely NEVER be ported to the ATV2.

Perian is written for intel x86 cpu and designed as a quicktime plugin.

The ATV2 runs on an ARM cpu and runs iOS. iOS was the starting point for the rewrite of QuickTime that is called QuickTime X - it doesn't support any plugins designed for the original quicktime.

Something like an ATV port of the iPhone VLC application (which underneath uses some of the same playback code as perian) is your best chance.

This is a "client" you refer to simply plays back transcoded streams that are generated by the Plex Media Server on your computer. It is very similar to PS3 Media Server and other utilities. This means a discernible loss in quality unless the tool "only remuxes" and the source material is really in h.264 format.
Your mac will run slower while it is transcoding and streaming video. Plus you need to leave your mac running to stream content from it.

This was NOT what the original poster asked for. They specifically asked about local (files on the ATV's 8GB flash storage) playback of video content that wasn't in MP4 / H2.64 / AAC format.
