Can anyone help me hack the Apple TV2 to play AVIs and use an ssh proxy?
Howdy,
I just found out that I can use my VPS as a proxy server on my Macbook Pro by using terminal and SSHing to it and modifying my proxy settings in my system preferences.
I also have an Apple TV 2 that I bought around six months ago and got bored of when I realized it couldn't play AVIs. I tried to put on a different kind of firmware but it didn't seem to work at the time.
Now it seems like there's a lot of options to do this. What I would like to do is jailbreak the appleTV2 and install some kind of custom firmware that lets me play avis, etc as I read before.
I would also like to set it to a proxy so that I can give it another ip address.
Does anyone know a good replacement firmware for the appletv? What is Seas0npass? Boxee? XBMC? Does anyone have any experience with this and could tell me what options are out there? Do I have to jailbreak (ie: with Seas0npass) the appletv first and then install something else on it like Boxee or XBMC?
Do any of them allow proxies? Or would the only way be by setting up a proxy through my router somehow?
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Seas0npass is software to Jailbreak your ATV2. This will allow you to install media player software like XBMC on it so that you can play all formats.
go to iClarified.com for instructions or try appletvhacks.net for more info.
I don't know if anyone has ported any proxy software to Jailbroken ATV2's...

Thanks!
I'm reading that there's an OpenVPN version of the dd-wrt firmware that I can flash my router with. That will allow me to setup a VPN for my entire network.
There's also something about policy based rules. I've been working a lot lately and haven't had a chance to get further into it, but this sounds like the best way to do that for the AppleTV.
