Hey guys,

I can't seem to get a definitive answer about this elsewhere, so I'm hoping that someone here can answer this one. It looks like those with a Mac can use Plex to stream movies to their ATV2 in various formats, but for those of us who only have a Windows machine how can this be accomplished?

Look at http://ericasadun.com/ftp/AirPlay/ - this is the best solution so far, it now includes experimental transcoding support

Thanks for the quick reply - that software is also for the Mac only. I was asking about a Windows solution, if one exists?

I've been looking at jailbreaking the ATV2, but am also having trouble with doing so in Windows. From what I can tell, redsn0w is the only app to jailbreak in Windows, but doesn't recognize the .ipsw file.

Any suggestions?

Answering my own question - digging around I finally found sn0wbreeze 2.1 will jailbreak ATV2 for iOS 4.1.

Jailbreaking your ATV2 won't really help it to play AVI/DivX. To play such files on an ATV2, they have to be either transcoded to MP4 or run through AVIDemux Avidemux.org and saved in a MP4 container with recoded audio.

There are plenty of windows programs that can transcode video, AVIDemux is cross platform (and I use it a lot to preserve video quality that is lost when transcoding)

Hey jh756 - I'm also looking to find a PC solution for Jailbreaking the ATV2 and streaming avi's. I have only seen Plex and Airstream for Mac so far. It looks like non-Mac users are SOL at the moment until a developer comes along and makes something PC compatible. Let me know if you find anything in the future and I'll be sure to do the same.

I'm currently stuck on the jailbreak process - I upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 before I began looking into jailbreaking, and didn't back up the SHSH blobs from 4.1. Unfortunately sn0wbreeze doesn't support 4.2.1, so I may be stuck until they either begin supporting the new version, or I find a workaround/solution for the SHSH problem.

There is no workaround for the SHSH problem. You are limited to a tethered jailbreak on 4.2.1
