So has anyone made any progress getting iPhone and/or iPad apps to run on the AppleTV2? Crackle and HBO-Go would be awesome additions.

This is not very easy, there are both technical and practical reasons why this hasn't happened yet.
Look for native ATV2 apps, not ported iPhone apps due to the fact that there isn't a great way to emulate a touch interface when running the app on the ATV2

Instead... look at one of the tweaks that enables airplay even in unsupported apps. That will get you the video streaming on a big screen but retain the control/UI on your touch device (iPad, iPhone etc)
