You will need the use of your Laptop/desktop to make it work. As far as i have found with software (with the exception of ATV Flash (Black)) they all require external transcoding. Right now i have a 4TB external hooked into my Airport extreme and my ATV hard lined into the airport. I run Plex (search for it in the nitotv install section) and it works pretty damn flawlessly. My only limitation is a 480P movie as my laptop is a little bit older and transcodes over wireless. but at 1.4-1.8GB per 120 minute movie, i am not complaining about the quality. the Plex server on the compute side is a nice and clean progam, and if you hook your laptop into your tv as well, its even nicer to use the native Plex browser.

I have tried to use XBMC several times, but i can't seem to get it to find the external HD to grab the movies and tv shows.
