Default Accessing movie files on a Mac over the net?

    Hi,

Hi and apologies if this is a duplicate posting but I've been un able to find any help on this.

I'm hoping a hacked ATV will allow me to access/play movie files remotely over the Net. Specifically I'd like to be able to be able to access MY files (on my home Mac mini media hub setup) when abroad using ATV. Any idea if this is possible? If so what hacks and software would be the easiest to setup and use. This is my "killer" application and I hope it's going to be possible and actually workable.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice. Argy

You've posted in the ATV2 section, so you are aware - there isn't as much software that works on this device yet.

You should be able to get this working with plex client on your ATV Plex iOS - Plex

There might also be solutions with XBMC -a quick google didn't throw up any though. Other than that you need to wait until VPN can be enabled on the ATV2

Yes Olethros software is "thin on the ground" but appears to be growing every day. I'd be interested in hearing what people think about the Firecore flash. I've emailed the makers as their features list and FAQ suggests it might be possible. I'll check out your suggestion for Plex. Many thanks, Argy

what you have to do is convert movies to h.264 with something like handbrake. What i did was put all my movies in different folders then you just drag the folder to itunes that allows the ATV to see it. make sure you set itunes not to copy the moves that way its just a link. then anytime you add a movie just drag folder over again. Also you would have to set your firewall up to allow the atv to talk to the mac mini from the outside..

    I hope that helps

xbmc for atv2 will do this with the need to setup a transcoding box.
