I've been reading some threads:

AFP server

Now inspired, I'd like to know if indeed what I want is really possible:

I'd like to use the ATV as a simple AFP server (max 30 GB) to share my downloads in the network.

These downloads should be downloaded by the ATV as well using a torrent client.

I'd like it to be "remotely controlled" by e-mail (setting up rules and applescripts). These rules are for example, "restart service" or "download this attached torrent file". This makes it easy to somewhat control it from any device or network with e-mail.

Finally I would love it if the ATV could serve as a N-wireless bridge (not router) for my new MacBook.

AND I would really want the ATV still to function as an ATV, with the interface and everything.

What do you think?

Edit: With wireless bridge, I actually mean access point. So I want it to share its ethernet connection, but not create a new subnet/ip range. The Macbook should get an ip-address from my linksys router.

I second the Acces Point request, I would really make use of this feature

you might want to check out the wiki over at awkwardtv. you will find out how to enable afp and how to setup a torrent client controlled via plugin

i currently have rtorrent running in the background that auto starts torrents placed in a folder on the atv via afp. all files are downloaded to the atv and can be accessed on the network if needed. also have tvshows setup. all works very nicely.

I was actually thinking of running Azureus headless.
I'm using my B&W G3 with it at the moment.
There is a nice dashboard widget which can be used as a GUI.
I would think this is possible on the ATV as well, right?

i have heard of people doing that, but dont know if anyone actually has.

any particular reason u want to run azureus?

High compatibility with trackers and the Widget looks nice and works well.
I've seen the Azureus web interface and I thought it was really ugly and didn't work that well.

How is rtorrents?

I'd still like to run Mail.app in the background.
Can you just run and hide OS X applications on the ATV OS?

Just had a look at the Azureus activity on my 400Mhz G3 (has been running for a couple of days, downloaded about 12GB):
Processor: between 2 and 15%, real memory: 30MB, virtual memory: 320MB.

Does anybody have this figures for rtorrent?

and for your question about running os x apps on the atv os in the background hidden. for the most part its yes. you shouldnt have a problem with mail. and you will need to enable vnc to control it.

and this is all pending you dont have the youtube update installed or are using the safe update.
