Default Trouble backing up ATV 40GB drive

Before I try to install OSX, I want to back up the factory drive. I cannot read it on my 2.5 IDE -> USB adapter. My other 2.5 drive works fine (30GB Toshiba). It spins up, but the os does not detect it at all. I tried on several Windows machines, and a Macbook. They all detect the Toshiba with formatting to either Mac or Win.
The ATV recognizes the disk fine, so it didn't die on me. Does the Factory Fujitsu drive only work with certain USB adapters? Mine is several years old, and as generic as they come.

OK, I got it partway resolved. I can now mount the drive with a newer USB adapter. Now I need to back it up and get working on it.
