I'm thinking about getting a Apple Tv I was wondering if it would work for my application. I want to be able to download nzb files and be able to see the external hard drive on my Pc so that I can point it directly their so I dont have to transfer files every single time.

Which appletv version1 or 2?

Version 2 can't do much yet but has great potential.

Version 1 should be able to do what you want but is probably sold out everywhere.

Not yet. Refurbished Apple TV with 160GB drive - Apple Store (U.S.)

I would probably go with version 2 just because if I got the 1st one I would probably regret it in several months. I can get version 1 on ebay real easy.
So you can network the drive on your computer?

What are some of the apps that they are working on for the new version what do you think the time frame will be before it is fully functional. (LOL)

You haven't specified what protocol afp, cogs, nfs, FTP - I only think that afp sorta works right now.

They are making solid progress but anything that is not command line based and already available for other iOS devices is pretty much baby steps right now.

@ Olethrose I'm not really sure sure what protocol. I just want to be able to put an external hard drive on it and be able specify the nzb program to extract right into that drive.
I'm almost thinking to just get the 1st version because it's probably going to be a while before things like xbmc boxee and stuff will be available.

Boxee will probably never be available on new atv

It is physically impossible to use USB and hdmi ports at the sane time on new atv so you must store your data on a network accessible drive.

Looks like the version 1 is going to be the best option for now. Did the come out with different models for the first version? Which one is the best to get?

Even if someone gets the physical connectors to work. The USB is the wrong type - it is a type B connection. that means it is designed to operate as a device (like an external hard disk) not as a host (like a computer).

Unless the ATV has logic internally to switch from device to host depending on what is connected - you are out of luck with the USB connector on the ATV2 - it is for jailbreak and restore only.
