    Default Storage/TV Question for Newbie

    Hi,

I am interested in buying a new apple tv, but everywhere i read about apple tv i read that apple tv streams music, photos and videos from itunes library..

So must be the mac pc with the itunes library powered on?
So for what is the hdd in the apple tv?

I thought that the apple tv syncs all content from my itunes library on my mac including videos, music and photos locally to the apple tv harddrive.
So i donīt need to have my mac powered on when i want to listen to the music or watch videos when i am on my couch in front of my LCD TV

Because currently i use an Vista Media Center BareBone on my TV and I want to replace that one with an apple tv, but onely when there is no need for a powered on mac.

So please bring clarity into my thoughts

I also read that some people already brought eyetv to apple tv?!?!? Is it possible to record tv shows and schedule recordings on atv? Also use EPG?

Indeed, the appleTV syncs your iTunes data with the appleTV, so after the sync is complete it doesn't matter if your mac/pc is on or off... when something changes in your itunes library, that change is then copied to your appletv .. (so if you remove a song, it will be removed from the appletv aswell, if you add, same story)

    But bear in mind,

The apple TV syncs with iTunes and iPhoto, but it does not sync from your movies directory, to play divx and stuff you need some extra work.

    hope that clarifies some

    Thanks alot... that helps me...

But if I convert my movies from divx to mov and put them into my itunes library they would be synced?

How to get divx and xvid on atv?
I read i need to install codecs on the atv.

But what is the easiest and most comfort way to get these files also on the atv?

You can convert your divx (and whatnot) and import them to itunes, and yes, they will sync. on an unhacked appleTV.

    1. hack the apple tv (search for 'patchstick' and 'appletv' on google)
    2. activate perian (make divx and stuff playable threw itunes)
there is acatually a good tutorial on http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page
just read the 'beginners guide'... it explains everything

Well, that's up to you, i have never liked itunes for anything but tunes... so i use itunes for the tunes, iphoto for photo's and the rest i use hackery (read the beginners guide)

(i bought a second hand appletv this weekend, for 150 euro... it's good fun! But be aware that it supports only HDMI or component -not to be mistaken with composite-)
