Questions concerning MKV Support and 1080i playback
Hi,
I'm thinking about getting myself an apple tv.
My big question:
Is the processor in the box strong enough to playback MKV-Containers with 1080p/i Video and AC3 Sound?
Are there any formats, I can't add support for?
Thanks so far

the appletv processor is pretty weak, 720p mkv files have pretty massive problems playing reported across the board. the problem is only partially mkv, the main problem is the majority of these files (afaik) are high profile h264 which the appletv is not capable of playing consistently. personally i abhor mkv and avoid it like the plague, but can't fully blame the crappy container for its well known issues w/ the appletv.

I use Visualhub to convert. 1080 MKV files convert well and play well,

Ok.
Thanks for the quick update.
Indeed, it would have been a miracle, if a Mac with a 1Ghz Pentium-M chip had played back h264 encoded video files..
I'll wait for the next generation which hopefully includes a state-of-the-art CPU..

dont misunderstand, it can handle h264 main and baseline profile, just not high profile.

The answer is...
No. The processor in the box is a 1ghz Pentium M, SSE2 instruction set. Nowhere NEAR the processing power for 1080i/p, much less splitting the Matroska files WHILE decoding and rendering. 720p will probably be the permanent cap for this machine, if I'm wrong let me know
