Leopard requires a minimum of 512MB ram in order to run properly, that and the aTV has an SSE2 only proccessor (not sure what the status of SSE2 and Leo will be)
bump de bump bump
what's the status on SSE 2 now? Haven't we been using an SSE3 emulator anyway?
I was able to load leopard onto an external USB drive, but the farthest I got was a kernel panic on bootup. I patched the kernel using the kernel patcher out there for PCs to run leopard on their SSE2 machines, but it doesn't look like it worked.
It's possible to run Leopard on an AppleTV - runs a little slow due to the 256M ram. Here's a rough outline -
You can't run the Leopard installer, it will complain about the RAM -- you need another mac to perform the actual install. Since Leopard installs universal binaries, you can actually do the install from a PPC (I did!).
Read one of the Tiger on AppleTV howtos for a general idea -
- swap the kernel for an SSE2 version
- replace the boot.efi with the appletv version
- install com.apple.Boot.plist
- install Info.plist for AppleFileSystemDriver
Notes -
- remove the AppleEFIRuntime and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement extensions, they will crash
- Video will be forced to the resolution Backrow was running until you install natit
- System Profiler requires an SSE2 patch to prevent it from crashing
Remember to nuke the caches or you'll have issues -
- /System/Library/Caches
- /System/Library/Extensions.mkext*
Status -
- Video: works (with QE/CI over DVI - requires natit)
- Ethernet: works
- Wirereless: works
- IR Remote: works (able to launch and control frontrow)
- Sound: no sound device found
Could you make an image of your leopard that has been patched and post it online?
really?that's marvellous~ i tried in the way u mentioned above , but without luck. the farthest i got is a full screen of english which i will post later. i hope 2 get helps from here. big thx! (ps: i am chinese, sorry 4 my poor english)
Great, I am going to try to upgrade mine over the holidays. Detailed write-ups would be appreciated in the meantime!!
i installed leopard without
- install com.apple.Boot.plist
- install Info.plist for AppleFileSystemDriver
and the atv keep on reboot again and again right after it comes to the apple logo screen.
did anyone knows how to install or modify these 2 files??
