Plugin idea: iTunes XML parser
I've been trying to work out a way to get my existing iTunes library, which is on a very big disk, into the Apple TV without having to sync the bloody thing onto its tiny hard drive, or having to leave another computer on just to stream it. I've yet to find a way, but this led to a plugin idea which I thought I'd suggest.
Here's my plan... it's a little like ATVFiles, but rather than browsing a folder, the plugin would parse an "iTunes Music Library.xml" file on a network disk. It would then present the contents of the xml file in a similar a style to the Apple TV default browser. Selecting an item would begin playback of that item.
This should enable the library to be managed by iTunes, and browsed by an Apple TV. it also avoids the problem of not being able to sync non-standard files to the Apple TV. The computer that manages the library wouldn't need to be on for the Apple TV to use the files, as long as the network drive was still accessible.
It's just an idea - and I'm up for giving it a try using the plugin templates on AwkwardTV. Any thoughts? Any potential problems I might run into?
