I recently purchased a used Apple TV unit that has XMBC and Boxee already installed. So far I am liking it. However, I do have some newbie like questions.
1) How do I know what Software Mod version I have (ATV?)
2) Is there a guide on how to map a NAS to the unit for media files?
3) Is there a PC based tool to move media files over to the Atv unit?

Do you mean the atv os version? That can be accessed from the settings/general menuQuote:

I will look into my version I have for future reference.
My NAS (Synology 209) supports all the common ones. I was a little confused to if my Apple TV unit had to run UPnP or not. If I am reading correctly that is not the case. I just have to configure the Apple TV unit correctly.
NitoTV is installed however, again I do not know how fresh it is. I will continue to research this.

Neither the ATV itself or NitoTV have support for UPnP - just so you know. There was a frappliance that did this - Home MediaCloud - but it stopped working around ATV OS 2.1Quote:

Okay, I was able to collect the information needed to continue this thread.
My ATV version is 3.0.1
I have been able to map my NAS while in XMBC. The only problem is that it sees folders but now media (audio & video) files. Also, once I get into XMBC I cannot back out of it. I am certain that it is a user error.
I was able to log into the ATV unit using SSH explorer however, I could not move any files over to the ATV unit. I am going to continue looking for a tool. I wish FireFTP, Firefox plug-in, supported SSH but it does not appear to.
When trying to connect to the ATV with my iTunes, it never sees the ATV. If my NAS is running an iTunes server could that cause a conflict?

Via what protocol? - Exiting XBMC, isn't difficult, with the default skin, this is located at the main screen, on the bottom left.Quote:

Are you looking to stream or sync from your iTunes?
I doubt it's to do with your NAS.
I downloaded WinSCP and it is working great. I can now move files over to my ATV unit and play them.
I followed the link you supplied as well as some others and I am still unable to see my ATV on my iTunes. I will continue to research this. I am scratching my head. I guess streaming would be the best. I wish my ATV could see my NAS as it has the iTunes server running on it.
Concerning my ability to see the media folders but not the files themselves. You asked the question via what protocol. I was using a Samba share while using XMBC. BTW - changed screen resolution and now can exit out of XMBC now that I can see the buttons and am able to exit.

I got my iTunes and ATV to sync. It turned out to be a firewall issue.
Now to keep attacking the problem of not being able to view the media files themselves but only the folder.

Well, I got everything up and running. All was well and I was enjoying it. Then Boxee started to run slow and almost hang. So, I started messing around and reset the unit. So, due to my stupidity I no longer have any hacks / mods on my ATV.
I guess this is a lesson learned. The bright side is that it forces me to by ATV flash and do everything myself and educate myself some more.
I am sure I will be posting more in the near future.

My advice, forget boxee, it stopped being usable a long time ago on the ATV1 - at least in my testing.
