Hi. I've been trying to workout how to install VLC on the AppleTV without installing OSX on it and i see everywhere that it has been done. I can't seem to find one place where the process is explain in a simple way. Can someone please make a tutorial or something. Also is it going to be possible to make a plug in for the frontrow software so you can select streams from a media server using VLC? Thats all that's missing for me.
It's not hard at all.
First you have to be able to close the Apple TV-"menu". And then you copy the file VLC.app over from your computer. Then you open it with Terminal from your computer.
I've tried quitting but the application keeps opening up again. Is there a simple place that explains how to stop watchdog?
Also does it matter where you put the VLC.app on the appleTV?
Lastly, something I've always wanted to know, how do you open an app in terminal? Just type its name?
I have not tried this but this link may help in stopping the watchdog from restarting the AppleTV software from auto restarting.
and after deactivating the watchdog you need to perform these steps:
SCP files from another OSX machine Desktop to Apple TV:
sudo scp -r ~/Desktop/VLC.app/ firstname.lastname@example.org:/tmp
Move files from /tmp to Media Partition:
mv /tmp/VLC.app /mnt/Media/
Launch VLC movie in fullscreen
(assumes you've copied the VLC app to the Media Partition)
/mnt/Media/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC -f --video-on-top /mnt/Media/movie.avi
Thanks for the help. Got it sorted now :)
