I hear what @pioneer is saying and agree. Sound is pretty fundamental to using the ATV as home theater setup, a mac, or even a server. So...
Given that 10.5.5 seems impossible to download at the moment (I'm willing to host but don't have it), what is the easiest way to upgrade my ATV1 to OS X (any version) such that analog audio works?
Does anyone have a version of OS X running on an ATV1 with analog audio working that they are willing to explain how they got it to work?

I have 10.5.4 and would be interested in doing this with you. Again, would rather just find the 10.5.5 image out there somewhere, but also interested in getting a nicely working ATV1. Won't have a lot of time in the near future, but happy to help if I can.Quote:

I plugged in the Apple TV and the yellow light flashed a while (no video while this was happening) and then the image of the Apple TV came on the screen with a "?" blinking above it. Did I miss a step? Can anyone who got it working explain exactly how to format the drive and how to use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the image? Did I do it right? If so, can it be the type of disk that I used? Any explanations?

If I had to guess, I think you missed the step in which you change the partition UID to some long string of numbers/letters. I think the ATV1 boots from a partition with a particular ID and you didn't set yours up correctly. I think you have to do it after you copy everything over. There is a page on this site that talks about booting from USB that has more details.

I thought that was only if you were booting using a USB device. I'm booting straight from an internal hard drive. I thought all I had to do was restore the image onto the hard drive and boot from it. So are you saying I have to change the UID on the internal hard drive as well?Quote:

From what I'm reading on this forum, many people have used a new drive (larger than the one that comes with the Apple TV). To me it looks like they just restored the image onto the hard drive and everything worked fine. I'll try treating the new drive as a USB stick and change the partition UID.
