Appletv is not responding at ALL!

I had the day off work, downloaded a few movies and realised they were xvids instead of 264. so instead of converting them I decided to download the patchstick image, mount it with disk utility and reboot the appletv and see what happened.

The appletv now starts (without the patchstick in) but once it gets to the main menu the screen does not respond to the remote.

The remote is commuicating with the appletv itself because i can see the light changing colour at the front of the box.

However, this does not do anything at all. menu + - does not restart the box and even when i unplug the atv for 40 mins it still hangs at the menu screen.

Have I ruined my appletv? I'm devistated!

You haven't ruined it. You can restart it or restore the factory setting. Please note that if you restore the factory settings that you will loose your manually applied update.

I would recommend the restore. Then review the update procedures closely and attempting again if you want.
