I would not recommend replacing ~/Movies with a syslink to /Volumes. /Volumes itself is already a symbolic link and that could get rather dicey. Especially considering nitoTV automatically makes links of any mounted volumes in /Volumes into ~/Movies. This could lead to very erratic behavior and probably even some really bad crashes. It is really bad form to do something like this and i HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend against it. NTFS is really not the way to go on any mac based platform, its just a bad idea.

thanks for the reply. What would you suggest me doing then? Should I restore to factory then start over? Is there a better guide out there I should use?
I have a windows laptop and loading to NTFS is best. Will the other format work well with vista? I have heard people repeatingly saying NTFS is bad but I only need ATV to read data from the drive and that's it. Give me some explaination would be much more convincing.

I wouldnt recommend starting over, but if you are dead set on using a windows format i would go with FAT32 rather than NTFS, NTFS just really doesnt play nicely with apple products. Testing for me on this end with NTFS is impossible but i am capable of testing issues with FAT32 because i could take a spare drive and format it to FAT32 and im pretty accomodating on this end to test out issues that i can replicate and reproduce, as far as NTFS goes though i have no capability to format to it, and in the past when i have i've basically destroyed hard drives to the point of no return and basically had to toss the hard drives out (when i had a roommate that had a PC that was basically the only time i could format and test with NTFS) I really do recommend staying away from making a symbolic link of /Volumes to point at ~/Movies though, i could definitely see that having disatrous results.

You see the disk listed in diskutility but is it actually mounted to /Volumes? You can make a symbolic link manually from the Volume into ~/Movies/ if nitoTV is failing to do it, why nitoTV would be failing to do so is a mystery to me.

Thanks, I will try to format mine to FAT32 but how do I create a symbolic link manually?

Unhappy nito 0.8.3 on atv 3.0.1 can't see usb hd

    hi,

i'm at atv 3.0.1 with nito 0.8.3 but i can't see my usb hd.

    atvfiles can see it fine.

i need nito to play dvd .dmg files on the usb hd.

    thanks for any help offered.

    happy new year.

    *solved*

i went to nito settings & install turbo kext enabler, and even though it says it's already installed, the usb hd showed up after that.

    @ nitoTV

something that isnt clear in the Wiki - is the recovery.dmg needed for USB and NTFS functionality ?

No it is not just for AFP and DVD iso mounting, along with a bunch of other things that i cant remember off the top of my head. Is there any reason you can't do FAT32 rather than NTFS? i really think its the worst possible drive format to use on the AppleTV i dont know how many times we have to point that out

EDIT: So i found way to test an NTFS drive and it autolinks into my ~/Movies folder no issues, nitoTV doesn't officially recognize it as a volume, BUT it should still automatically link it into ~/Movies/ regardless because it does here. The only drawback would be you have to unmount it manually in the terminal to properly unmount it (until next version anyways because i added another case value for ntfs file system types (in the file manager they should up as 5 instead of 2 like all over drives i've tested) After running the smart installer be aware that it is crucial to reboot the appletv as well before any USB drive will show up.

    Default Need Help

I am new to the hacking stuff. Sorry to post in this thread off topic but I am unable to get responses in other threads. So I unlocked my apple TV 3.0.1, got Nito TV, Boxee, XBMC and all that jazz loaded up no problem. I keep getting an error when I run Smart Installer. It won't load. I have learned a little on my own about SSH'ing in and typing commands. I have rebooted etc.... I can't seem to get Smart Installer loaded so that I can use the USB and also use my Time Capsule to stream movies. Any suggestions!!! I have scowered the internet with no luck. If I need to SSH in I just need some step by step commands to type in and I am good.

Any takers to help!!!!!! Much appreciated, and Happy New Year to all!!!

    Default OSBoot?

Any update as to why the OSBoot Volume is showing up under Files in NitoTV and if it will go hidden again?

I was hoping this last update fixed that, but unfortunately it didn't. Not a biggie, just more of an annoyance more than anything.
