Help! Blank screen after restart
Newbie here: I managed to get the latest version of Software Menu on the Apple TV, seemed to be running OK. I used it to install NitoTV and a couple other plugins. Wasn't seeing any NitoTV functions in the menu (was I supposed to?) so I chose 'Restart Finder' from the Software Menu. The ATV restarted and after the initial Apple logo and the intro video the screen is totally blank. I can hear the interface sounds when I click the remote, and I can play music or videos via the iPhone Remote app (album art does display while music is playing) but otherwise there are no menus, nothing.
I can access the diagnostic menu by holding down the Menu and - on the remote. Diagnostics reveal nothing wrong, and it looks like I'll be able to restore it to factory specs (and v2.4 software) if I need to. I'm not sure what I screwed up, hoping all the latest plugins are stable (I did screw up a few times trying to install Software Menu and NitoTV).
Any idea what has happened? Anything I can try before I revert to factory settings and try again??
EDIT: solved it, thanks to help from someone on another board. Was not NitoTV at all, was the ATV Files plugin. Removed it SSH and rebooted, as was well
(exact Terminal command was sudo rm -rf /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/ATVFiles.frappliance)

while sshed in
cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/
sudo mount -uw /
sudo rm -rf SoftwareMenu.frappliance
install the latest version which you can get from this page of the wiki:
SoftwareMenu - AwkwardTV
from there you can install nitoTV where the smart installer is (nitoTV - > Settings -> Install Software - > Smart Installer)
from there reboot your AppleTV (nitoTV - > Settings - > Utilities -> Reboot AppleTV)
Hi, I would appreciate if you could extend these steps. Currently I have APT 3.0.1 and installed the ATV USB Creator, which doesn't work.
I downloaded the file you said, but I'm lost in what to do next. How do I uninstall the previous SoftwareMenu, and how to install the new one.
Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

I gave you all the steps you needed. theres really no more in depth i could go. and you need to be a lot less vague then "it didnt work" with regards to atv-usb creator

Sorry for that. What I mean't with "it didn't work" is that the Software Menu doesn't let me click any of its options (3rd party plugins, scripts, etc.). From what you said, this is because the versions that came with the USB Creator isn't for the 3.0 or 3.0.1.
So I downloaded the file you linked, but am lost in what steps to take for it to work. This is what I did:
1. With cyberduck, I copied the downloaded folder to the ATV.
2. Opened terminal and then copied the commands you posted. (I sshed to the ATV first)
Code:
cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/
sudo mount -uw /
sudo rm -rf SoftwareMenu.frappliance
After this I couldn't see any change. Did I missed something?
Thanks.

Code:
wget "http://iscripts.googlecode.com/files/SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run"
chmod +x SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run
./SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run
that should do it

Weather App error
Hi Nito,
is there a way to reinstall the weather app for 0.8.2? Every time I try to run the NitoTV weather app, I get "An Error Occurred" press play/pause to restart Apple TV. Any help you can provide is most appreciated!
Cheers,
mik

There must be a problem with the weather.plist file. check the console log /Library/Logs/Console/501/console.log
should be spitting out some kind of error. the weather plist file is in ~/Library/Application Support/nito/
try deleting that file and it should copy in a new one. you will need to re-add any custom weather locations you have added from the old file again but if the file was the problem then it should open okay again.

Nito,
Any idea on how to un-link OSBoot from the Movies folder (blacklist it again)? I have three young kids that use the Movie folder to watch all their movies and I am nervous that they access to this OSBoot file.

It should be on an internal blacklist, but you can edit the blacklist from nitoTV - > settings - > General -> edit blacklist (at least i think its in general of the settings section, theres so many settings i forget where they are sometimes)
just add OSBoot exactly to that blacklist and hopefully that should do it

I have just patchsticked a friend's aTV, installed nito, perian, smart install, everything is just fine. I have afp, etc, but when I open the Files menu I only see OSBoot volume. I have an external HDD plugged in and I can see through ssh that it's volumes are mounted, I can access it remotely through afp, but I only see OSBoot in the Files menu (with Movie written as title).
I have no such problems on my own aTV, it always mounts the external volumes and shows them in the Files menu.
ps. I replaced ~/Movies with a symlink to /Volumes and it works currently
Could you show me how to do it more clearly? I'm having the same exact problem.
