yeh the appletv's hardware has been the same its entire existence, short of apple changing the hardware the essential hacking to get basic functionality like ssh enabled will require the same process, the plugins will constantly need updating, but to get ssh installed will remain the same. The ssh enabling changed slightly between 1.0 and 1.1, but since then it has remained the same. And the only reason it changed then is because the original OS 1.0 that shipped with the original AppleTV's wasn't as lightweight as it's 1.1 counterpart. This is why the 1.0 OS.dmg is so highly "coveted" because it has many of the requisite files needed to get important functionality out of your AppleTV (such as AFP)

Well, I did the factory restore, update to v3.0.1, and rebooted with the patchstick (latest from atvusb creator). The Software Menu is there but I don't seem to be able to get to the smartinstaller via the atv menus. All items under the "Software Menu" just beep when I try to open them (3rd Party Plug-ins, etc).

I am able to ssh to the atv just fine, though.

Any thoughts on what I should do next?

remove the copy of SoftwareMenu bundled with the atvusb creator, its an old version that is no compatible with the 3.x AppleTV software.

    while sshed in

    cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/
    sudo mount -uw /
    sudo rm -rf SoftwareMenu.frappliance

install the latest version which you can get from this page of the wiki:

    SoftwareMenu - AwkwardTV

from there you can install nitoTV where the smart installer is (nitoTV - > Settings -> Install Software - > Smart Installer)

from there reboot your AppleTV (nitoTV - > Settings - > Utilities -> Reboot AppleTV)

Since it is my first post I would like to thank you for the incredible plug-in. I own a 1.0 atv and tried a lot of software, but finally realized that I need only one nitoTV.

I have just patchsticked a friend's aTV, installed nito, perian, smart install, everything is just fine. I have afp, etc, but when I open the Files menu I only see OSBoot volume. I have an external HDD plugged in and I can see through ssh that it's volumes are mounted, I can access it remotely through afp, but I only see OSBoot in the Files menu (with Movie written as title).

I have no such problems on my own aTV, it always mounts the external volumes and shows them in the Files menu.

ps. I replaced ~/Movies with a symlink to /Volumes and it works currently

This worked fine, I'm all set now.

    Thank you.

One aside -- under Files, the "OSBoot" volume/folder seems to be stuck there. I tried to eject it using the left arrow, but it failed. Not a big deal, but I don't need it there for anything.

The OSBoot wasn't there in my earlier install ATV OS 2.4 / Nito 0.8.0, but its not a big deal. And, its not an eject -- more like an "unmount" that needs to happen.

After all the effort to upgrade, the one bug I was hoping that Apple would fix was not fixed in v3.0.1 -- there's a bug in the photos slideshow where apple doesn't correctly recognize rotated photos taken on Canon cameras. Its very odd because they do recognize the rotation just in the photo browser, and this bug was first introduced in ATV OS v2.4 -- prior to that it worked just fine. There are a number of other people that have noticed this and complained in apple's forums, but I guess they don't care enough to fix it....

no you wouldnt want to unmount either, this partition is required for the AppleTV to function, it isn't supposed to link into the Movies folder, it should be on the blacklist of folders/volumes that are never linked in. not sure how its getting through that list.

Default NitoTV Quicktime Playback issue (Rewind)

Found a problem recently and wanted to see if it's a known issue with anyone else also.

While playing a file in NitoTV using Quicktime Player, and I try and rewind after watching part of a video file, it will freeze and then reboot the Finder on the Apple TV. It doesn't happen all the time, but I'd say 3 out of 5 times it will happen.

I am playing AVI files (XVID codec) through a mounted NAS via SMB Mount. I have NitoTV 0.8.2 and Apple TV FW 3.0.1 installed.

Thanks in advance for any help on the situation and feedback! Still loving the program and appreciate all the hard work of the programmers.

This is an Apple bug, it is present in ATVFiles, Sapphire and nitoTV, it doesn't happen with all codecs but i've noticed it does seem to happen with practically any file in an AVI container, the only files i can think of that it doesn't happen on at all are h.264
