Default New to Apple TV need some Advice

    Hi,

I have about 300 DVDs that I would love to make copies off and store digitally and also be able to play them... so that I can get rid of the actual DVDs.

I can't find anything online similar to the Apple TV so this seems like the only solution... however, even the largest one 160GB won't even fit half of my DVDs... if I calculate correctly, at about 4GB per DVD once you rip it, it would only fit like 40 movies.

My question is... is there anything else out there that would work for what I'm trying to accomplish? It would be great to have something like a 500GB computer/hard drive that would make a copy of any DVD and store it and then let you view it on a Guide-Like screen and play it...

    Thank you

If I'm not mistaken I believe people have already hacked apple tv to replace it's hard driver with larger ones.

There are several software choices that let you rip a dvd movie into a format that iTunes, and more importantly your iPod, will recognize. If you just want to store your movies on a hard drive and watch them on your computer using iTunes you can use larger, less restrictive file sizes and formats. HOWEVER, if you want the ability to copy the movie to your iPod then you must meet specific file requirements. I believe these requirements must also be met to use the file on the AppleTV.

I have tried several and the best one in my opinion is "PQ DVD to iPod Video Suite". You can google the site. The software costs around $30 and you can download it and start using it instantly. You can change quality and size output very easily. So to rip a movie that will work on an iPod / AppleTV you would set the resolution to 640 by 480 or less. You can also adjust the quality of the video and audio. If you want smaller video file sizes use less audio and video quality and lower the resolution.

An MP4 file with a resolution set at 640 by 480 with high video and audio settings looks good on an iPod and AppleTV. But be aware that it is less quality than a dvd and is definitely not HD quality. For me the quality compares with cable tv, you only really notice something on solid black backgrounds which may appear boxy. But for me, that's nit picking; it isn't if you are a person that wants the best quality video.

The good news is that the size of a ripped movie will be about 1 to 1.5 gigs. A tv show will be about 250 megs. So you can easily store all of your movies on a larger hard drive. Where as a typical dvd is 9 gigs uncompressed and using something like DVD Shrink will still leave you with a 4.7 gig file.

PQ DVD to iPod Video Suite also lets you convert other files into MP4 format. So for instance you can download a YouTube video in flv format and then convert it to an MP4 file and import it into iTunes and watch it on your AppleTV.

Sorry for the long post. If you have other questions post back.

Even better use an external hard drive to boot apple tv which means you can use a very large hard drive 500gb or even 1tb.

    Hi
I bought atv for excatly the same reason and multimedia drive are so ugly and who want to use microsoft and .... tons of reason

So first if you want to go for multiedia drive it seems the best for the moment would be Storex AIVX 360HD (What HI*FI review)

Two if you stick to your idea congratulation atv is amaising once hacked (who is gonna waist 1200 hours to convert DVD in a decent quality)
For future if you want to convert some DVD I think the best and easiest is Hanbrake to convert to mp4 for FREE (I tested lots of these soft and most of them sucks most of the time it mess screen size when not US format)
    So lets get started........
best site for atv is www.awkwardtv.org (&.com) find the Patchstick project.
This allows to boot from a USB key and runs scripts to install everything you need.
This prevents you to void the warranty opening atv to get the disk.
Pay attention when I did my own USB stick the files downloaded did not work 100% and scripts had to be corrected. May be updated now I did not check.
Anyway dont be scared it is quite straightforward and I can guide you if needed.
(I am available next week after I take a week off)

The best plugin for atv is Sapphire is a TV Show/series manager but unfortunatly it does not play vob but is plan for the future I think
For DVD you need to install NitoTV it works fine but doc and explanation are not up to date neither clear but once again I will guide you.
Also take note my experience is that it works fine (or each time) with full disk copy.
I waist weeks to try to get it work using a movie only rip and a main feature rip.
I have some movie only playing but then I cannot change language or sub.
Also do perform update of the firmware there is a safe update doc on the site expaining what you have to do and you can make it with you USB key

There are lots of other plugins and trial on this site but up to now I stick to this two.
Honestly if I could I will get rid of NitoTv but

    Go on

    Very very tired

Once hacked you can use external USB HD you can connect shares on network
connect USB to Aiport if you have one

You can also stream from an other computer (no hack needed)
I did not test it myself but if think later I gonna use several USB disk in a stripped raid
This is standard formating option on apple

Bye I am gonna check awkwardtv to see what's new
