    Default Library support qustion

    Greetings all,

My name is Tyler and I just signed up today. I'm very familire with iPhone and iPad and their respective jailbreaks and whatnot. After the release of the new jailbreak for ATV 2g, I plan to purchase one later today.

I cant seem to find a solid answer on a couple of questions though I have about the product in general.

First, I realize it must use the itunes library to be able to stream the videos to the box, my question is; will it play unpurchased content? Such as movies I have on the hard drive that I add to my iTunes library, will my ATV be able to stream these?

Secondly, if it will stream unpurchased content; will it stream mvk/divx/xvid movies? Or if you could just provide me with a list of all supported formats, that would answer my question.

Thirdly, what are some forums that have alot of discussion about the new 2g TV, app support, jailbreak support, hacks, etc? I figured hackint0sh is probably one of the best since I've lurked here before for other reasons, but I want to be able to have access to as much information as possible.

    Thank you for your time

Did you look at Apple - Apple TV - View all technical specifications for Apple TV. before posting?

by default none of these "formats" you listed above will stream to the ATV2

After the jalbreak, there will likely arrive two-part apps that work in a similar way to AirVideo/AirVideo Server does for the iPhone/iPad.

If you want to get your hands a little more dirty, with use of Avidemux.org you can remux most divx/xvid to a m4v file that will *likely* stream fine via iTunes. This involves changing container format from AVI to mp4, unpacking and copying the video data and then recompressing the audio data from MP3 to AAC.

MKV is a bit more complex, but can likely also be remuxed without losing video quality.

So then currently there is native app that will support streaming (or even live conversion with streaming) with avi, mkv, etc.

Well that's definitely a bummer. I hope the jailbreak scene takes off quick with this one. Juding by the scene for the 1st gen I'd say so, but it's hard to say how many of them are making the upgrade.

well nitotv is the first ATV2 app but right now it can only do weather and RSS feeds. This will take time but things are definitely possible.

Actually, I'd say it is not in comparison to the first gen. The first generation ATV was playing non-native formats in one day, the second generation ATV still isn't.

Note: This is not due to a lack of effort. Extending the capabilities of the first generation was considerably easier.
