Default Just got an Apple TV, is it possible to access it through the network in Finder?

I just got an Apple TV and bought the hacks off of patchstick.ca and patched it. Everything seems to be working fine that I've used so far, but I haven't installed anything that I need to install...well, myself (such as NitoTV).

I'd like to know if I can, and how to, do the following things (I've googled some stuff, but I was hoping to save some time by simply asking the experts):

    - Can I access my Apple TV over the network? I can certainly see it on my network, but when I try to get into it, all it says is "Not Connected", and I can't see any files. Is there any way to make it accessible through Finder?

    - Can I have Apple TV import items into "My Music"/"My Movies"/"My TV Shows" from off of my external hard drive? I hooked up my 2TB external USB hard drive to my Apple TV and am, right now, playing a movie from off of it using the File Browser. Works great. Can I have these files displayed under the "My Movies"/"My Music"/"My TV Shows" menus on the main menu of my Apple TV? I imagine that the codecs I downloaded will allow the player to play these files, am I correct?

    - Can I access the external USB drive over my network, too? What I'd like to be able to do, more than anything, is keep this 2TB hard drive hooked up to the Apple TV so that I don't have to move it and/or have it re-scanned whenever I hook it back up to my laptop (which I would have to do a lot, since I move my laptop around quite a bit, including when I'm watching TV/movies, for school).
Since the Apple TV is always-on an is connected to my network, it gives me what I think should be a great opportunity to have it accessible by all computers on the network at any time. In which case,

    - Can I import files into my Macbook's iTunes from the external USB hard drive that's hooked up to my Apple TV? If the files are on the hard drive (...which...they are...), and the device it's hooked up to is on my network, can the files then somehow be shared over the network? Logically, then, wouldn't I (or anyone else who accesses it, such as my roommate) be able to import the files from that hard drive into my iTunes Library?

Keep in mind, I'm still pretty new to this (just got my Apple TV two days ago), so instructions would be great.

Thanks in advance for any help!

First mistake. None of the devs will support an ATV patched with that. Use atvusb-creator - Project Hosting on Google Code

Yes, but you need the ATV 1.0 recovery image (don't ask; it's illegal to distribute). If you have that, you run nito's smart installer. After that, it'll share all disks.

This would have to be synced through iTunes, and if it's not an mp4 file, it's just not worth trying to make it work.

    See above.

Not sure what you mean here beyond file sharing. If that's what you mean, then yes.

    AwkwardTV is a good guide.

Explain? Pretty useless little quip if I can't really take much out of it.

I appreciate the link, but I'd like to know why the patchstick I bought was such a mistake, and why whoever won't support it or anything.

I guess if patchstick.ca really does suck, then, well...crap, right? Waste of ~$60? Can I still use it, and just add onto what it offers? I've been using it since last night and everything's been working like a charm so far, but I can't figure out how to use some of the more advanced features, and there doesn't seem to be much on the site in the way of explaining how to do what I'd like to do with it.

I actually used that very same patchstick creator that you linked to, first, before I bought this one, and after awhile (two to three hours) using the software it installed (I only used Boxee and I forgot what else, didn't get into any advanced settings or anything), it seemed to crash my Apple TV and cause it to give me a blank screen when it booted up. Repeatedly. So, I did a factory reset, bought patchstick.ca, and installed that.

I'm browsing AwkwardTV right now in hopes to figure stuff out, but if you or anybody else can point me in a more quick'n'easy direction, or provide some more information/instructions, I'd appreciate it.

They've insulted all of the developers who make the software you really want to use.

Beginners Guide3. What you really want is SoftwareMenu which will install all the other plugins.

I gather, then, that it isn't possible to enable AFP with the latest version of Apple TV?

Yes it is - I have 3.0.2 and AFP - I used ATVUSB creator and NitoTV like I recommended.

Don't pay for any software to enable this on the ATV, the authors don't receive any money for this.

Odd. I followed the instructions on Awkward TV and could not get AFP to be enabled. Furthermore, updating all the software that came on the ATVUSBCREATOR caused my Apple TV to restart and freeze on a black screen. I left it there for about a half an hour or so, and nothing happened, so I factory-reset again and used the ATVUSBCREATOR once more. Upon updating SoftwareMenu and restarting, I got the message that "An error has occurred", which restarted my Apple TV again, after which SoftwareMenu had completely disappeared (but Launcher was still there). Because I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how to remedy this, I am getting ready to do yet another factory-reset, and am also getting more than a little bit peeved as I spent nearly an entire day yesterday trying to make this all work, on top of the past hour and a half or so. I guess if it ends up working and I learn something from it, whatever, but I've only learned to repeat these motions over and over again and to use methods/scripts/software that don't seem to work at all, like those outlined for previous versions on AwkwardTV.

tbh, things worked closest to the way I wanted them to when I first installed the full-version Patchstick.ca software that I bought, although I have no doubts that the ATVUSBCREATOR stuff that I'm using now is better and more customizable, it's certainly not any easier for me to use so far.

My Apple TV is restarting at this very moment with the latest Apple TV updates, and I'm about to put the ATVUSBCREATOR patchstick in.

What do I do from here?

Just patched it with ATVUSBCREATOR. Began updating software and as nitoTV finished installing, I got the error screen again and had to restart my Apple TV. Now, I get the error screen everytime I try to open the "3rd Party" submenu under SoftwareMenu, and thus can't get to installing anything else.

I smell another factory-reset. What on Earth could I be doing wrong?

...to further clarify my first post, what I am trying to do is this:

    - Hook up my 2TB external hard drive to my Apple TV.
    - Have Boxee and all that other sweet stuff access the data off of that external hard drive directly.
    - Enable AFP (or whatever I need to enable) so that I can access/modify the contents of that external hard drive from any computer on my network (ideally, windows and Mac, but my roommate and I both use Macs, so that's all that's really necessary; I have an old laptop that I use for torrenting that runs Windows, so being able to access/modify the hard drive's files from that machine would be, again, ideal)
    - Import files from off of that hard drive into my (and my roommate's) iTunes library while it's still hooked up to the Apple TV
    - Sync my Apple TV's "My Movies"/"My TV Shows"/"My (whatever)" with mine and my roommate's iTunes

Why do this? Because we move our laptops around a lot and would rather have the files accessible over the network at all times that we're home, instead of hooking up the hard drive to one of our computers and having to re-scan and re-sync stuff. Since the Apple TV's always-on, theoretically, this should work...right?

All the rest of the features're peachy, but that's ultimately what I really want to do with my Apple TV.

FYI, I just re-installed everything from the ATVUSBCREATOR again, and still get an error message when I try to access "3rd Party" from SoftwareMenu.

    Sigh.

    (sigh, again)

Not to flood my own thread (too late, I know), but I factory-reset yet again, reinstalled stuff off of ATVUSBCREATOR, and began installing/updating things from the "3rd-Party" menu. nitoTV installed just fine this time. Installing Overflow caused the error to pop up this time, restarting the Apple TV, and thereafter causing the same error message to pop back up whenever I tried to access the "3rd Party" submenu under SoftwareMenu.

I neglected to mention earlier something that I did that may be doing this (durr). I followed these instructions to try and activate AFP:

Complete Noob guide to getting afp on your atv [Archive] - boxee :: forums

I got the 1.0 os.dmg file off of a popular torrent site. It's the only one I could find, in case anyone wants to check it out and see if I even did this properly to begin with.

...nothing happened at the time. Nothing updated. Nothing was enabled. But shouldn't factory-restore erase whatever damage might've been done by this?
