[Install] OSX on an AppleTV
Hey guys, I'm hoping that someone out there has an answer for me . . . I'm getting fairly stumped.
I'm trying to run through the install procedures here, and what I think I'm running into is that the copy of 10.4 I have is not the Intel version.
I'm running a 2.4 GHz dual core iMac, so I've got 10.5, of course, but when I try to run my 10.4 installer, I just get "Mac OS X 10.4 cannot be installed on this machine."
And . . . of course . . . everywhere I look, 10.4 is no longer for sale, so if there was a universal (PPC/Intel) version available at one point, I'm not even sure where I'd get it.
Any ideas?
Does anyone know if there's a way to get the AppleTv to run 10.5?

First, obviously you have the Tiger PPC version, so it will not install on your intel iMac. The intel version was never for sale. There is no legal way to get an intel version of tiger, except you buy an "old" intel mac with install dvd on ebay ...
The other ways of getting a tiger install dvd should be known ...

Ash, you're freaking awesome. Thank you! I think I may have a buddy who got a Powerbook with Intel/Tiger on it, so I'll see if he'll let me screw around with it.

I'm having the same problem. I bought a couple of supposedly "intel" install disks and I have a macbook with leopard installed on it and it will not install on this machine, so I cannot get any further. Are all restore disks machine specific? What do I have to buy to install tiger on my intel macbook's external IDE to firewire drive? And then is it going to work on my friends apple tv??? So frustrating. I want to do it legally but has the ebay guy that sold me these recovery disks sold me a PPC version???

Need a mach_kernel for Mac OS X 10.5, the mach_kernel posted was for 10.4.
If anybody can explain how to make the mach_kernel it would be great! I also eave only 10.5...

If you have gray CD it is suitable only for that line of computers with which it is sold.
If your computer came with a system 10.5 and above then it almost impossible to install a lower version of the system because in previous versions there are no drivers required for this or another computer model. If the CD startup in Intel computer, it means that the CD for Intel or universal. If the CD for PPC you will see at startup Kernel panic.
Sorry for my English. Ukrainian

If you want to install from a gray CD you will need to modify the file "OSInstall.mpkg" without the quotes,
which is located in /System/Installation/Packages/
on your "Mac OS X Install Disc"
Unfortunately I have not fully learned how to manage it

Try this
You are where I was. I ended up using the aTV flash from Applecore. Once installed, I was able to write to the ATV box via SSH using terminal. I have also (following instructions on the aTV forum) been able to add the OSX 10.4 via cyberduck . This is very easy and only requires you to have an intel mac 10.5 to download an update from apple but not install. Once downloaded, you cyberduck the file across and reboot the ATV. This means you can then open it in the settings menu in ATV. It allows you to do many things, the best of which is adding an ext HDD.
I am a complete novice at this stuff, but just by applying my small brain and doing lots of reading I was able to get the ATV broken and 10.4 put on it without bricking the unit or taking it apart.
Go on, give it a go!!

there must be another way...
This is so frustrating.. I have an old (non-working) Intel Mac Mini that has Tiger installed, a 13" MacBook (Leopard) and an old iMac (Panther)..
How am I supposed to get Tiger onto a hard drive so I can put it into my Apple TV?
If I put the Tiger disc into my MacBook, it won't install of course because its 10.5 natively. It would be fantastic if somebody could just make an image of a hard disk with the Intel version of Tiger installed and put it on bittorrent.. I don't see any legal or ethical problem since I already have an Intel Tiger license with my Mac Mini but since its broken I can't use it..

@monty2323
You can partition your hard drive on your MacBook and install Tiger on the second partition...
What are you doing with the broken Mac Mini? Want to sell it?
