hardwire component resolution to 1024x768
I'm trying to get my Apple TV working with my existing 4x3 DLP projector.
It only has VGA and component inputs, so obviously I'm using component.
I can run in 720pHD mode and all content is displayed correctly, but since
16x9 already uses fewer projector pixels, 4x3 contained in 16x9 is small and
uses even fewer pixels. Not ideal for getting the most lumens out of the projector. If you have a small child like I do, you have a lot of 4x3 material to display....
So, I'm now running in 480p mode and letting the projector scale up.
4x3 material works fine. I encode 16x9 material as 4x3 letterboxed and
that also works. Trailers get stretched vertically. Eventually I'll have to
re-encode all 16x9 material to native when I finally convert all my TVs, so
this isn't an ideal solution.
As an experiment, I connected a 1280x1024 LCD monitor to the HDMI port
and Apple TV displayed a new resolution that isn't initially offered,
1280xsomething P. 4x3 material fills the screen, and native 16x9 material
displays correctly too, with bars at top and bottom.
So I'm wondering if there's a way to get Apple TV to offer 1024x768 native over
component, and then maybe everything will work the way I want. Maybe something as simple as some XML config file on the disk or something?
Anyone have any bright ideas?
