    Default Hard disk advice

    Hi there.

I bought an apple tv off ebay. It was with out a hard disk and I got it pretty cheap. I put in a hard disk of my own and loaded the smallatv.dmg on to it. It seem to work yesterday, and worked today for a bit. I then restarted it and it will not boot from the drive. I bought a new 500gb sata drive for it, but don't have the converter yet. If I plug the sata drive into the atv with a usb cable it picks the drive up but won't boot.

So it is working and detecting drives, just not the ide one that I need it to work with atm.

Any ideas? The drive works fine if I plug it onto my mac.

    Thanks for any help.

The AppleTV is quite fussy with it's paritioning and also with the drives it supports.

Yeah I ran through that tutorial. It was still playing up though. I will give it another go guess.

Well I have managed to get it to work (sort of). So after hours of messing about I have managed to partion the drive correctly using parted and ubuntu. I have then manage to copy the correct files onto the recovery partion using update 2Z694-6013-013.

It boots up I then choose my screen type. Then I hit factory restore and it restores. I then ran the updater on it and it updated. I then used patch stick on it and that seemed to work.

I managed to use it for a while and it was working. It then just decided to die again. I then redid the whole procedure and it worked again. I then closed up the apple TV and it died again. I have yet to take it apart again.

Could something be happening when I close up the apple tv that is messing it up or could the patch stick be killing it?

    Any one got any ideas?

Sounds like a hardware fault (cable that shorts out when the case is closed, maybe?) to me
