Hey All,
I got my AppleTV working successfully with Jon's 10.5.8 Torrent image.
Since I had to do a lot of browsing and guessing, I'll write down the issues I had, and the solutions to those.
1. I downloaded the torrent image from here:
Download AppleTV OSX.torrent from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way
This is the bigger version of 10.5.8. None of the other file links worked.
I followed this tutorial:
[GUIDE] Install Leopard on AppleTV
Removed the hard drive from the Apple TV, put it in a USB2 2.5" IDE Hard Drive Enclosure
Partitioned the root(Fujitsu 40gb something) with Disk Utility. Select the parent of OSBoot, not OSBoot itself. Then click the partition Tab. Then click options and check "guid". Then partition with Mac OS Journaled.
You will have one partition instead of the 3 you started with.
Then download the older free version of Carbon Copy Cloner here:
http://files.bombich.com/ccc-3.4.7.dmg
Select the ATV 10.5.8 Image (Jons Image) for the source, and clone to the Apple TV Hard Drive
After it completes, pop it back into the Apple TV and you should be good to go.
Mine worked with no issue.
Not without some compromises though, its really slow. I ended up downloading Tinker Tool and a few other products from this page:
Software for Vintage and Obsolete Computers
They help you disable a lot of unneeded features.
I also downloaded Monolingual which helps you remove PPC Architecture, and unneeded languages.
I am not very happy with the memory usage, of course the machine blows through 256mb of memory on boot, and starts to swap immediately. The slow hard drive causes a backlog of requests and it's obnoxious. I haven't been able to strip the OS down to a respectable level yet, but perhaps I will be able to do so. As an alternative, I purchased a 32GB IDE SSD. The speed on the SSD is 85MB/s read and 65MB/s write, which is a farcry from the awful speeds on the 40GB Drive included in my original AppleTV.
Specs on the original hard drive show Fujitsu 40GB, 4200RPM, and I've only been getting 25MB/s read speeds MAX. Not to mention with the swap on the drive, the IOs become very important, and spinning disks don't do well with that. Here's a link to the SSD I bought. Amazon.com: Ssd 2.5" 32Gb Ide 44Pin Mlc: Computers & Accessories. I bought the last one at $61, if you check around you can probably find one for the same price.
For those of you not familiar with Swap, its essentially when the memory fills up and the operating system has to start writing "pages" to the Hard Drive instead. And as you probably know, the hard drive is much slower, so this is a big performance killer.
Here's one issue I ran into later:
I decided to do a Software Update, and the AppleTV has been really slow ever since. I would recommend that you avoid doing the software update unless you're glad to re-partition and start over. If I find the culprit, I'll try to update my post.
Also if you need any files, you can PM Me.
Here's a screenshot from my Remote Desktop to give you inspiration, godspeed!

Hi All,
Thanks to everyone who seeded that torrent. Got 10.5.8 *almost* totally working on my apple tv.
Borrowed Jon's image, bought a new (5400rpm, 8mb, 40gb) harddrive from amazon. My computer is a PC, so I first tried using a combination of Transmac and MacDrive to format/mount Jon's image. It didnt work. You really need to be able to use a mac (or go through the USB). Using a mac, I first tried Disc Utility, which was unable to mount the image.
Having exhausted all other possibilities, I did the correct thing and restored using CCC 3.4.7. Worked on the first shot. The system runs surprisingly fast for all the doom and gloom I'd been expecting.
That said, one more issue - no audio! I tried to go into the sound properties and select Digital PCM (optical into a receiver, BTW) but I did not have any bitrate preferences. Does anyone have the Sound.prefPane.zip file - rapidshare seems broken. Thanks for all the help!
Got it! It was in the Audi MIDI not the sound prefs! Woo, working perfectly
Can someone please please seed this? I have looked everywhere and everything is dead.
