@orangejedi829, I tried downloading 10.5.5-joncgde2.dlc via JDownloader and found that parts 002 and 003 were missing so the whole thing is useless at the moment. Does anyone have 10.5.5-joncgde2.002.dmgpart and 10.5.5-joncgde2.003.dmgpart that I can get off them so that I can try and complete my ATV/Leopard experiment? I have the ATV HDD out and mounted on my Mac ready to go but can't use the disk image, very frustrating.

Disk Utility reports after verification of the DMG that 022 is also missing or corrupt so if anyone can supply 002, 003 and also 10.5.5-joncgde2.022.dmgpart that would be great.

Any help with this greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: No luck with the 10.5.5 DLC file so I downloaded the 10.5.8 optimised v2 DMG and (except for audio) all working just fine. I am listening to iTunes right now but I have the analog PCM#0 going into the CD input on my old stereo and it's not what you'd call loud! But it works if I turn all the Mac volumes up to full and the stereo to 3/4 the way round, normally this would blow the speakers but in this case it sounds like listening to someone's stereo in the garden next door! But I can hear it.

The OS X performance is slow and most mouse actions have a 4-5 second lag before actioning so I may try and remove some core apps as suggested in an earlier post and see what that does.

As for keyboard and mouse I've installed 'Mobile Mouse Pro' app on my iPhone and the Mobile Mouse server on the ATV so I can use the iPhone as a touch pad and keyboard, not ideal but it works well.

Thanks Jon it's an interesting little experiment, not sure if it's a goer yet due to the really low volume but I'll keep trying.

Is the AppleTV with Leopard 10.5.8 any faster than a 700 or 800mhz iMac G4 (anyone have experience?)? I have a friend with a G4 iMac with a faulty hard drive and thought I would trade him for my OSX ATV. So far it has been quite slow but I have been booting it off external USB over a USB1.1 Powered Hub (CCC is cloning the image over now). He mainly uses his current iMac as a web machine and some Starcraft 1, any ideas for this? Or would a new HD be better for him?
I am hoping the ATV is better because then I get the iMac

Not that I've had much experience with ATV 1 running Leopard, but if his iMac has more than 256MB of ram, he'd likely be better off with a new HD. I would imagine the RAM is the limiting factor in the ATV's performance considering the resources it takes to boot Leopard.

I got it going with Leopard on the internal HD, seems to boot pretty well. If it runs Starcraft 1 ok and can do iTunes and Web browsing, he'll be fine and I'll have a new addition to my Mac collection.

does anyone have a link or torrent to Jons 10.5.5 image? Can fine it any where!

I am going to attempt this on my 1st Gen ATV. Can I use another drive, and leave the factory 40GB untouched as a fall back (I have it setup with XBMC and CouchSurfer already)? I have a 30GB Toshiba I would like to test with first.
And I do need sound on the analog RCA jacks, so I assume 10.5.5 is what I need to use, correct?

I got the 10.5.8 installed and working, looks fine. I REALLY would like to try the optimised 10.5.5 with working sound if anyone can help.
I have a 10.5.2 disc and may even start fresh myself.

I follow the instructions for formatting a USB drive and the CCC'd the 10.5.8v2 image. My ATV1 doesn't seem to recognize the external HD though. Any special steps to make a HD instead of a USB thumb drive work? Anyone else get this to work? TIA.

[btw, I would also like 10.5.5 but can't download it successfully.]

i just put mine back to ATV OS with XBMC. It was a pita. I strongly suggest using another drive, or making a full drive backup of all 3-4 partitions before installing OSX. I was pleased with the look and feel of OSX on the ATV, but lack of sound made it more of an experiment, plus lack of ram demonstrated how limited for switching apps. I may pursue it some more, but unless I can use analog audio, it will not be usefull to me. I learned a LOT about messing with OSX from this experiment, and I learned what minumum specs I will look for in a Mac Mini. Core Duo and and 1GB min, maybe Core 2 Duo with 2GB, for full HD.
