I have a problem trying to install onto my appletv internal drive. This is what I've done so far:
    1) Downloaded Ash's 10.5.5 image, CCCd onto USB disk
    2) Booted into Macbook Pro, configured OSX, etc
    3) Changed partition, etc on USB disk
    3) Booted appletv successfully from USB disk! Yay!
    4) CCCd USB disk to Media partition
    5) Blessed boot.efi as follows

sudo bless --folder=/Volumes/Media/System/Library/CoreServices --file=/Volumes/Media/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi --setBoot -verbose

    the output is this:

    EFI found at IODeviceTree:/efi

Could not set boot device property: 0xe00002c7

Selecting the Media partition in 'Startup Disk' preferences has no effect either.... when I power down, disconnect the usb drive and power up again, it simply boots into the AppleTV OS.

So I'm not sure whether I'm missing a step, or whether the 'could not set boot device property' error is irrelevant or whether its indicating that I'm trying to do something that I can't because I've missed some other step???

I mean, I could just use the USB boot disk from now on, but when cloning it to the media partition seems so simple, then why not use that!

    Many thanks in advance...

have you found solution to your problem, I'm stuck at the same spot.

04 FEB 2011 UPDATE: Bricked my appleTV, tried to restore from disk utility to the media partition, no go, would not boot up, I looked at a recent post with JonMS saying just restore to entire internal HD. So I went ahead and tried that. BIG MISTAKE. Do not, I repeat Do not delete the other partitions on the internal HD because you will end up in my boat having to purchase some tools from amazon and an IDE to USB reader so I can restore the internal to factory settings using some torrent I found. Anyways, if anyone can offer up some assistance or direction that is clear cut please do so !

To anyone interested: RE: Installing iDeneb 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 on ATV1...

Installing via CD will not work if you are using a unibody MacBook Pro to install to the internal HDD (you will get a "still waiting for root device" error, which apparently means that the SATA DVD drive cannot be located or something).

I've tried to boot the install using a second external HDD (connected via USB) instead of the DVD, but get errors. Maybe I'm doing it wrong - I'm sure there's a way to install iDeneb from an external HDD or USB drive? All the methods I've tried have failed.

Your only option is to get an external DVD drive that you can connect via USB - although I can't confirm that this works since I haven't tried it, I have seen reports elsewhere that it does.

Right now I'm in the process of grabbing the 10.5.5 and 10.5.8 (v2) pre-made disc images and will copy them using CCC to the internal HDD and hopefully get things working that way. Let's see how that goes. I'll report back with progress.

I had perfect success by just opening it and connecting the hdd to an external kit to restore an image (iDened 10.5.8) onto it, but I am going to guess that you people do not want to crack it open. I opened it to clean it and to paint it black to create a server that I nicknamed "Night Servant," so I now have a black Mac server. I initially had it hooked up to a TV to make sure that it broadcasted via internal wifi so I could control it with my iPod and also made sure that it would accept any request to connect to it from a VNC server. Now my Mac Mini controls my Black Mac over the network through Screen Sharing, this seems to be the best way because you can just set it in a corner and forget about it, I also have an ex-hdd connected via usb for more storage. If you have any questions on how I did this I will be more than happy to help anyone.

Is it just me, or does wireless seem a bit flaky on 10.5.5? Wireless does work, but mine keeps dropping out - and I'm only one room away from my router :/

@petralime: If you're trying to install on the internal drive, you don't need a USB stick for anything - nor do you need to change partition types.

All you need to do is use disk utility to restore the 10.5.5 image to the internal disk drive. Connect the internal disk drive with a IDE-USB adapter, or do what I did and get a cheap $10 2.5inch external HDD enclosure. This will allow you to connect the HDD via USB.

I've tried to fix the blinking LED, but I can't get it to work This is what I did:

    1. Copy /usr/bin/osputil from ATV original image, to new iDeneb image (same folder)
    2. a) sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/osputil; and b) sudo chown root:wheel /usr/bin osputil
    3. My /etc/rc.local already had osputil --setLED=4:1 in it - so I added /usr/bin in front, to make it /usr/bin/osputil --setLED=4:1
    4. a) sudo chmod 755 /etc/rc.local; and b) sudo chown root:wheel /etc/rc.local
    5. Checked to make sure #!/bin/bash was at the top of rc.local (it was)

    Rebooted, and nothing

I was curious to isolate the problem, so I ran /usr/bin/osputil --setLED=4:1 from terminal. This is what I got:

    Code:
    AppleTVOSX:~ frontrow$ /usr/bin/osputil --setLED=4:1
    libosp.c:371:IRHIDDeviceReport: DeviceRequest failed (0xe00002ed).
    libosp.c:818:OSPLEDSetBehavior: OSPSetLEDBehavior failed
I tried using osputil from my original aTV image. I also tried osputil from the 10.5.8 v2 image. Same problem each time.

    Two issues:
    1. The original instructions say to use chmod for the root:wheel terminal commands - but this doesn't work. So as I typed above, I used chown. Is that correct?
    2. Ash mentioned on page 7 something about chmod +x. The '+x' bit isn't in the instructions though. Should I have used +x? If so, where?

Anyone have any ideas? This is the last thing preventing me from having the perfect 10.5.5 setup!

I have made a lot of tweaks to my 10.5.5 image, and get around 110-120MB free on boot! Once I get the LED fix working, I'll be keen to upload it for everyone to grab

True, but that involves removing the physical disk from the appletv. I thought it was possible to clone a working image to the media partition of the internal drive without removing it, then blessing it, then disconnecting the USB drive and restarting...

Not sure about the blinking light, personally I like it blinking orange on the black case, but you should be able to restore a working image to the hdd IF you had removed it. Once I got it working perfectly under my settings and mods I made a back up image for safe keeping later in case I messed it up and it works, but I had also removed the drive from the AppleTV. I strongly suggest making a back up of a working image and keeping it somewhere!!! I also suggest actually opening the unit cause that saves a lot of work later down the road!!!
