Is it usefull to run Plex on an AppleTV with OSX 10.5.8?
What about HDMI Sound? Is it now working, or not!?
I'm read many posts from ash, but they are not very clear about this issue.

Plex branched from XBMC partly because they did not want to be tied to supporting 10.4 and the AppleTV. Plex is more suitable for other Macs (specially MacMini) - I doubt that you would get any real benefit from running 10.5.8 and plex on your ATV.
There are plenty of threads regarding HDMI sound. Search around for this.

The new Apple TV isn't going to be available in my country for months, but they have already reduced the price on the old model to start clearing them out, so I rushed out and got one before they totally ran out.
Everything's working well with 10.5.5 with the exception of QuickTime, which is unfortunate because I want to run Front Row. Any ideas?
I have my ATV up and running fine on 10.5.5 as a media server running iTunes 10 on my home network (Thanks to everyone here). Just curious if there's a big a power savings benefit by letting it go into Sleep mode? It definitely feels cooler to the touch when in sleep mode, although I can't get a remote wake on lan command to work and there's no wake on ethernet option in the energy savings menu. The iTunes library disappears when it goes to sleep mode and I have to manually wake it up via the remote/keyboard/mouse.
Just curious if anyone else has been able to get a remote wake command to wake from sleep or hack that enables the wake on ethernet option in the menu.

How do I make this work internally. Open the Apple TV up and reformat the drive and install Leopard. I have tried everything. If I download the image and ccc it to the drive then bless the boot.efi file and then put it back in the apple tv in will work ones. Then after that I get an Apple TV with a ? above it. Re Blessing does not help.
Hi,
First post here. Since I don't use my AppleTV much (MacPro now sitting next to the TV) I decided to repurpose it as a router.
Using the 10.5.5 image from this thread, I was able to install to a USB drive pretty easily. Getting it to work from the internal drive was harder, but that works now too (repartitioned and used SuperDuper, which doesn't complain about the Apple Recovery partition type, unlike CCC).
A couple of little annoyances still. I seem to have no timezone data on my system, so it only knows GMT. The bigger problem is that I can't reboot the system unless I use the Apple remote (<Menu><->). I tried the bless fix from page 1 (RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting) but it must be only for 10.5.8. The .kexts from the fix cause my ATV to hang on boot.
Any ideas? I know ash has lost interest in this project due to the hardware limitations of the ATV, but for a small, quiet box running headless, the ATV can't be beat.
Thanks!!!
If anyone is interested, the optical audio out works just fine with 10.5.5. I didn't try passing through AC3, but setting the system to default output via optical was no issue. Neither was selecting the digital out interface manually in VLC.
I have to say I was reasonably pleased at the video playback performance as well. I played back some Quicktime movie trailers in 720p ... a few dropped frames here and there but very watchable. Not bad considering there is no graphics hardware acceleration available for h.264 via the OS (and the ATV only has a 1GHz Pentium M and 256 megs of RAM to do all the lifting). It's too bad we can't have access to the custom driver code Apple put into the Apple TV OS. But all in all it's not a bad little box.
Has anyone gotten sound to work with 10.5.8???? I've tried both analog and digital but nada. I used 10.5.5 and optical out worked perfectly but I'm surprised 10.5.8 doesn't. Any help would be greatly appreciate. I'll even pay ya through PayPal!![]()
I used iDeneb's hack for 10.5.5 and it worked well, no issues. However I wanted to install Safari 5.0.2 and iPhoto through iLife '11 and you need 10.5.8. I tried to use a work around someone posted in which you can change the system version and I was able to boot and run the updates and installations, had sound, etc. Then rebooted and nada.
It seems 10.5.5 runs faster than 10.5.8 any ways, so maybe I'll just deal with that version. If someone does get sound working on 10.5.8, that would be perfect.
