I use a passive usb hub. The ATV provides enough power for mouse and keyboard - the HDD doesn't work though. I use a PS/2-cable connected to my PC to power my usb hdd case. Without this extra power supply my disk doesn't even spin up ;-)

Actually, I discovered I was using the *wrong* power adapter for my external hd. Now that I am using the correct one, it works flawlessly!

WOW. I am extremely pleased with it. It's certainly not a speed demon, but with my limited budget and desire to use real Apple Hardware (vs. a Dell Mini, etc.) -- this is a GREAT hack.

So I am using Jon's image and the only issue I seem to have is the blinking orange led on the front. Steady white would be so much better.

But even more so -- i'd love to put this image on the internal hard drive and boot from it and use it as my machine (insane, I know!). I don't need the AppleTV functionality as I have an original xbox running XBMC.

Is there a tutorial for moving my CCC'ed image on my drive to the internal hard drive? Or is there another way without opening the machine? Or are we there yet?

Well, the easiest (and slowest way) of copying your installation to the internal disk is to simply boot from the usb disk and then use CCC to copy the running system to your internal disk.

If you want to have both ATV OSX and Leopard coexist, then simply copy your Leo installation to the Media partition on the internal drive. Bless it, and from now on it will always boot Leo. If you want to go back to Your ATV OSX, just bless this instead.
The important part here is, to NOT ERASE/FORMAT THE MEDIA PARTITION - the ATV Media partition structure will then coexist with your Leo installation files.

The faster solution is to open up your ATV and connect the disk to your Mac or PC.

To stop the LED from blinking just look at the lines under "Stop the blinking LED" in the first post ;-)

Thanks again, Ash! I appreciate the answers. Regarding the blinking LED:

    * Stop the blinking LED:

    * Copy /usr/bin/osputil from an AppleTV 2.2 image to the same folder on your usb disk. (755, root:wheel!)
    * Add this line to the /etc/rc.local on the usb disk: "/usr/bin/osputil --setLED=4:1"

    1) Does it have to be an osputil from 2.2? Can it be from 2.4? I only ask because I have looked everywhere on the net and can't find a 2.2 image.
    2) Does the line "/usr/bin/osputil --setLED=4:1" have to include the quotes? Any particular line should it be added to? I've opened rc.local with pico and it looks like it could go anywhere?

I'll be trying the CCC to move the USB image to my internal hard drive very soon. Hopefully I don't hose the entire thing!

Still can't seem to get the blinking LED to change to white with the rc.local. I can go to the terminal though and manually enter the string and it works (so I guess I don't need the 2.2 image). Not sure what I am doing wrong here.

Another odd problem. I am using a Creative Sound Blaster USB box for my sound (since I, too, have low volume the normal way with Jon's image). When I boot with it connected and have my external powered speakers turned on, I get a Kernal Panic. If I leave the speakers off (but the USB Sound Blaster connected), it boots fine. I have no idea what could be causing that!

Finally, if I try to use CCC to move the data from my bootable USB hard drive to the Media drive, CCC won't let me do it -- it says my ext. drive is not an HFS+ partition (it is -- GUID). Is the fact that it is a recovery partition throwing it off?

Getting closer to a fully independent, bootable machine!

Any version of osputil should work - but I just tested it with a 2.2.

"/usr/bin/osputil --setLED=4:1" (without quites) can be anywhere in the rc.local. But mind, the first line of the rc.local has to be "#!/bin/bash" (without quites).

Then use "sudo chmod 755 /etc/rc.local" and "sudo chmod root:wheel /etc/rc.local" (without quotes) to make the script run on boot.

    (updated the initial tutorial)

Update: Ash, the links you gave me I'm not sure how to use (I tried using Jdownloader but couldn't quite figure out how to use it). Could you please provide me with the direct RS (http)links

Could you PM me the RS links for Leopard? How have you found the performance as I want to use Plex to play all my MKV files? Also, If you want can you go back to the normal AppleTV OS?

With the DMG that was supplied do we need to customise it at all or is it just an install and go?

My image is already customized and tweaked for max performance ;-) The only thing you can still do to get better performance, is to disable spotlight.

The only thing you might want to change is the UI language.
