Of corse, frontrow...the obvious; I've tried everything except this!

    Hehehe

    Best regards,

So I suppose this sounds like a dumb question, and maybe it is... I just thought I had SOME idea as to what I'm doing, but apparently not.

I dl'd 'Jon's Torrent' from ash's guide, it's a ~3.5gb DMG file (mounted is ~36gb). Now I have no idea what to do with it. I couldn't use CopyCatX to replicate the DMG or the mounted DMG onto my ATV drive (the ATV drive was removed and is connected via USB to my MBP, wasn't an available option to replicate the image from Jon's Torrent)

Maybe I'm missing something, but what exactly is this file for? It seems like it should be a replacement for the ATV drive but I'm not seeing how.

My goal is to use the internal drive of the ATV and have OSX installed on that. I'm in the process of downloading the ideneb 10.5.5 file and when it finishes I will try to follow the guide as provided by ash but in the mean time am really just wondering what the file from Jon's Torrent is, and why I can't figure out how to use it.

I've read through the 10 pages, and will re-read through them but just wanted to post this to see if someone could help.

So... disregard that post. I used Carbon Copy Clone and Jon's Torrent (ATV OSX image) to replicate that onto my ATV's internal hard drive. I was able to boot-up and when using my MBP, I can see the ATV on my network.

Problem now is... when I try to start screen sharing, I'm asked for a password. I can't see any mention of a password in this thread (except at the very start of the first post, but that didn't work), can anyone help?

EDIT: ... and disregard this one too. Seems like the password was 'appletv'

So I hope that this string of posting problems followed by me eventually finding the solution will entertain some people. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this thread, it's really helped me.
It seems like almost everything is working now. I installed some updates, set-up my .mac account and Chronosync for some folders to make sure that they're *nsync. I have connected iTunes to the iTunes library on my NAS and have been able to use screen sharing to remotely administor the Apple TV w/ OSX on it.
I cannot seem to figure out how to get the internet to work. Intranet (is that even the right usage?) works fine. I can see shared folders, connect to my NAS, etc but when I launch Safari I am told that I am not connected to the internet.
Any ideas? I'm going to work so I doubt that this one will be solved by me anytime soon (though maybe later tonight) but am wondering if anyone else had these issues.

Thanks again, sorry for the questions - if I would have waited I would have solved all of them.

I think the network settings use my DNS servers and perhaps even my gateway ip is setup manually. Try to check that in the network preference pane/advanced options/DNS

Btw, all passwords are "frontrow" - even the vnc password should be.

So... I used Jaadu on my phone to connect to my MBP at home, then used Screen Sharing on my MBP to connect to the ATV (as I mentioned, intranet connection for ATV was working - not internet) and looked at those settings. I had already changed the TCP/IP settings and just forgot about the DNS Server. I added that in and now I've got it working!
I haven't figured out why I can't use Jaadu to connect to the AppleTV just yet (ports are forwarded) but I feel like it'd be easier to work on that when I'm home and not using two VNC connections to control my AppleTV.

    Thanks so much ash!

For all those who want to try my disk image: DON'T COPY IT TO AN EMPTY DISK!. It's a partition image, so you have to copy it to an already existing partition.

I added this information to the tutorial as well - just to make sure everyone's reading it.

Does moving the system to the internal drive speed it up at all?

I know the device only has 250 megs of ram so it will be limited but when booting off external drive using an image i d/led, the system is horribly slow. Opening up safari or browsing the computer takes awhile to do.

Like I said, I know it is limited but I am just trying to make it a little faster. Thanks
