This thread really should be removed, we don't allow warez on this forum - redistributing an apple OS without permission is warez.

With information from awkwardtv about partitioning, and building a linux-based USB memory stick that can boot the ATV then all you really need is the Apple TV Recovery partition - from an ATV that shipped with 1.0 - you can use that to bootstrap your way back to a working system. This is available if you hunt around on sites we are not allowed to link to.

You can actually use a different size number when you create the media partition if you have a bigger HDD.

Yeah, that would be helpful for me, too...since leopard just likes to randomly restart, and therefore, pretty much useless for sabnzbd. ;(

Someone has to have this file, since none of the other images I've downloaded are working it needs to be this one.

Well, since installing Leopard didn't work out for my ideal download box, and I hadn't made a backup of the ATV HDD before I wiped it (tried to, but did something backwards and lost it), I was sitting with a box I couldn't use for 2 weeks - same as a lot of you!

I figured out a way to get your ATV back to the ATV OS, which I think is what a lot of you want to do!

There might be a way to do with without taking out the HDD, but it wasn't a problem for me to just pop the HDD out and format it.

Download this.

Format your ATV HDD with it.

Download Firecore's ATV Flash via buying it or finding it at your favorite spot. I'd recommend buying it if you want to use their added features, if not, you're just downloading the latest ATV OS using their software. Up to you.

Start ATV Flash up, agree, next, ect. download the OS.

It'll download the ATV OS and should save it to your Downloads folder.

Download Carbon Copy Cloner.

Mount the ATV OS in Downloads - Should be something like: latest1304246102600.dmg

Clone it to the OSBoot partition on your ATV HDD.

And... you should be good to go!

What would be the easiest way(s) to take a COMPACT BACKUP of an Apple TV Drive for later RESTORE purposes?

Well I would do a compact Backup with the dd commands.
Use an IDE enclosure and plugin your HD.

Follow the Instructions under: Prepare a Hard Drive - AwkwardTV
Look for the section: Acquiring the necessary images

With a new HD all you have to do is create the partition layout (good tutorials online) and dd the images back.
That's how I got it to work.

For OSBoot you can also download the latest Version from Apple and restore the dmg (cryptic filename, 3.0.2 2Z694-6013-013.dmg) to (in my case) /dev/disk1s3
Then I plugged back in my drive and everything worked.

Only problem I still have is that the version of my recovery OS is 1.0, because I copyed an image from a friend, who is an appleTV user from the start.
