The windows version of DD(a raw write util is included). Read the info.. "dd if=filename of=\\?\Device\HarddiskX\PartitionX" Thats it..

Unfortunatly my apple tv doesn't run

This is the procedure I followed:
1- I run ubuntu and wiped the partition structure of my NOT working 40 gb disk apple tv with tis command:
"dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc bs=4096 count=1M" (sdc is my NOT working 40 gb disk apple tv)
2- close ubuntu
3- open xp
4- download your immage called smallatv.dmg from torrent
4- open dd folder and from prompt I have lunched the following command:
"dd if=smallatv.dmg of=\\?\Device\Harddisk2\Partition0 bs=1M --progress" (Hardisk2 is my NOT working 40 gb disk apple tv previously wiped)
6- riassembling the disk inside the apple tv case
7- start apple tv
8- after few seconds appears the linux appletv logo and the light became green nothing else

What I made wrong?

Hi,
I have finally downloaded the file and use the dd to create it my 160GB USD HD then I took the disk out and replaced the internal disk from my ATV. After it blinked for half a minute all I got is the a harddisk logo with a "?" on top, what went wrong, can you help.

I am ALMOST home free.
I just bricked my Apple TV last night.
If it wasnt for the smallatv.dmg image put out on the internet, I would be sitting with a $230 brick.

I did have problems using the Windows dd, so I booted with a copy of backtrack 2, after I had copied the smallatv.dmg to an external USB hard drive. I then used an IDE interface on a brand new out of the box 160GB Western Digital Scorpio hard drive. Since it was brand new I didnt overwrite it with zeros.
My partition for the Western Digital was /dev/sdb1.
So I had to make sure it was mounted as /mnt/sdb1
The dmg image was sitting on the root of the drive.
My partition for the 160GB NEW drive was /dev/sdc
So... I issued the following command in my backtrack 2 session as root.
dd if=/mnt/sdb1/smallatv.dmg of=/dev/sdc

This ran for about 10 min.
I put the NEW 160GB drive back into the Apple TV unit an did a factory restore by holding down the menu and the scroll down (-) key at the same time. It took a while, but finally it went through the restore process and everything worked great.

The only thing that i noticed now, is that settings only reports it as a 40GB hard drive. Did I do something wrong with the dd command. Or is this normal, and I need to resize the Media partition with iPartition. The only problem is that I dont have a Mac. When I can afford it I will get one.

Anyways... Just want to say Thanks to Magiske. I would like to get the full capacity of the drive but just having a working Apple TV back now is great!!!

The only thing I did different is my disk is not brand new and I didnot overwrite it with zeros. Will this make a different? I will try again and over write it with all zero and recover again.

Torrents are all dead. I still have my bricked appletv.
I can use mine, but no chance to update my appletv to newer firmware versions.

You had to determine the size of the (free) Media partition and then create it. If you dont it still is 40 GB.

i know you are not on a Mac but if you have the chance to use one, the command would be
sudo gpt show /dev/disk3
where disk3 is the ATV disk. This would show something like

start size index contents

The important part is the line above Sec GPT table:
2732072 485665063

This is where the Media partition will go, just my example, the two values for you are probably different. Create the Media partition with the following command, replacing two values with the numbers from your output as in the example of the two numbers above:

diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk3
gpt add -b 2732072 -i 4 -s 485665063 -t hfs /dev/disk3

I never tried this on Windows, so sorry if it does not help.
