Dead HD no original image to restore
Hi Guys I just purchased an ATV from ebay with a dead Hard drive.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to getting it up and running with a new drive. I have found plenty of links on how to upgrade drives but they all require the original disk image. is there a way around that..
Thanks
Matt

a Mac IS an Linux Box. Terminal should work the same.

@greggsympington: NOPE, that's not true! Though there many terminal commands UNIX tools are quite the same, the kernel (and linux IS just a kernel) is different. Mac OS X uses the darwin/BSD kernel.
Just to be correct. ;-)

This question comes up again and again. I point people to atvusb-creator and the atv-bootloader wiki which has all the info required to completely rebuild an internal AppleTV disk from any AppleTV update from scratch.
I've also walked several users thought how to do this here and over at the awkwardtv forums. Search and you shall find them.
You don't need an image of the disk.

I have tried downloading the file 5 or 6 times but I keep getting this segmentation error!
I am doing it via telnet on a mac to the ATV.. I even tried using ubuntu live cd but had other issues with that.. I've been at it for hours and searched every where but just can't find any answers.. can someone please help

looks like the wrong version of dmg2img is on penbuntu, opps, my bad
ignore the Segmentation fault error.
also since you using penbuntu under a root login, you don't need to use sudo to elevate your privileges
# sudo mount -o loop -t hfsplus atv.img atv-update
-sh: sudo: not found
you need to watch the disk usage under penbuntu. you are taking a 300+ MB disk image and converting to another form of diskimage so right there you are pushing 1GB.
