Default Can't get external USB storage to work...

    Trying to use this guide:

    http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Beginners_Guide

Seems well written, and I'm trying to follow every word. Got past the patchstick stuff, boots from that OK, enable SSH and AFP from AwkwardTV no problem. Then there is the actual AppleTVHacks USB patch, where I execute:

    sudo ./install-atvrhd.sh

from my intel-mac. This seems to do it's business. At the end it asks to reboot, then I run over and connect the USB drive when I see the ATV flying windows at boot up. It reboots again as expected and from then on I see black with apple logo (for a long time) then finally another reboot and a screen that offers restart, run diagnostics, revert to factory. I've tried various things from this menu - restart, run diag then restart...nothing ever seems to make any difference. Eventually I have to revert to factory. I've run through this procedure numerous times over the past two days tweaking various steps but I can't seem to break through. I wonder if the timing of attaching the USB drive is very sensitive? Or, similarly, can you not attach one at all and still expect to boot into normal (internal drive) mode? Is the type of USB drive important? I'm trying to use some Western Digital MyBook 340GB model (formatted "Mac OSX journaled") - seems fairly mainstream. Do I need to attach the usb cable first then power the drive or vice versa? I've seen someone confirming OSX 10.4.8 as the intel-mac "host" computer definitely works, and then someone else said 10.4.9 works....I'm using 10.4.11 on my intel-mac, so I wonder if that is causing a problem (the script uses some of the intel-mac OS X files and sends them over to the ATV). Anyone have any other ideas?

At one point, I just moved on to installing plugins like NitoTV and such, and that all seemed to go fairly smooth, but in reality the main functionality that I need is external USB storage.

My ATV is version 1.0 (no YouTube plugin, also says 1.0 iTunes).

i have had the same problem, as it turend out

the USB stick that i used wan't compatible, it was a 4 gig sandisk u3 smart stick (or something like that). it came preinstalled with a lot of crap-ware which i removed (with their tools) but while hacking away at the apple tv it turned out that not all of it was gone.

when i grabbed an old 256mb memory stick it all just went as documented.

The only difference i've noticed was that while i created the patchstick on the sandisk thingy it created two visible partitions, and when i created it with the older 256mb stick i just saw one (the other was hidden)

so my best guess is, that the new(er) stick didn't alow for it to be made bootable by the tool...

(lesson that i learnt whatever you buy, buy it without crap from the seller)...

I don't think it is the same problem. Like I said, I didn't have any problem with the patchstick (that I know of)...it booted from that fine and I was able to get the AwkwardTV menu item and enable SSH (BTW - my patchstick was a 256MB thumb drive). It was later, when running the install-atvrhd.sh script to modify the ATV for external USB storage that my problems arose. If you were successful at this, I'd be very interested to know what OS version you were using on the host intel-mac.

    cbarret,

sorry, indeed i misunderstood your description. But i did not use the usb for mounting an external drive so i can't help you there.

Hope you do find a solution

(you know that awkwardtv has quite a good wiki part on their site: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page)

The wiki is great, and even more important they have a relevant forum section. I just found this:

    http://forum.awkwardtv.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=759

So, someone else has the same problem that I do. The EXTREMELY frustrating thing is that their forum registration process is broken, and it not sending confirmation emails during the registration process . It says "contact board administrators" if you have issues, but I can't contact them without logging in!! I've searched everywhere for some kind of link to contact them, and there is nothing. Chicken and egg issue here. I've registered twice under two different email addresses and neither one got a confirmation email. So, as far as I can tell, the forum is locked from new users, and there is no way to let the board admin know about the problem. To make matters worse, it won't let you attempt "re-register" with the same email address, as it thinks that account is currently awaiting email activation, so each time I try to register again (thinking "maybe this time it will actually send the account activation email") I have to come up with a new email address.

If someone has a login over there, could you PLEASE let them know about the problem. It is sooooooo frustrating to see someone with my same issue and not be able to discuss it with them. I even know how to get past the problem they are currently up against, but would love to find out what version of OS X they are using.

Registration at awkwardtv.org seems to work now.
