Question Buying AppleTV - OTB software version?

    Hi there,

I am looking forward to buy an AppleTV in the nearest future. My hacking plans are pretty modest - all I need is a full set of codecs and perhaps AFP. I definitely want to run the latest 2.2 software to be able to use the iPhones in the family as remotes and use the Genius feature. While browsing through various Take 2 hacking resources, the following question arose: which software version is brand new 160 GB AppleTV likely to have out of the box? If it will come with Take 2 pre-installed, will I still be able to use a patchstick?

    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for fast reply greggsymington!

Just to confirm: it will most likely come with the latest (2.2) software pre-installed, and I will still be able to use the Patchstick to install SSH, AFP and QT components. Correct?

    TIA

you can use the iphone as a remote in 2.1, i dont recommend running 2.2 though, most of the plugins havent been fully updated to support 2.2 reliably, and some of them may never be.

    Hey nitosoft,

thanks for advise. Honestly, I'm not planning to install any [Back Row] plugins (for now). All I need is to install QT components (primarily Perian - to make use of my movies treated with AppleTVFooler ) and stick to the default interface as much as possible. And I would kinda' like to keep Genius as well, and that is I believe a 2.2 feature.

Do you know about any issues with installing the codecs under 2.2 OTB?

    Thanks!

Actually, what threw me off is that all the tutorials I read start with the hacked 1.x AppleTV and then proceed with safe upgrading to 2.x. Thus was my original question: whats up with 2.2 out-of-the-box? I don't have the device yet, but I'd like to be prepared when I get my dirty paws on it
