    Default Bricked aTV

    Okay, so I bricked my ATV. Boots fine, if i try to do anything, it gets all fuckled and flashes between the silver apple logo and the main menu. Current firmware is 1.0, I believe. I have the system opened, and the little chip in the middle, not sure what it is, gets really hot after about a minute of operation.

    I wiped the HDD at first, trying to install OSX on it directly. Big mistake right there. After that, I got my backups restored to the HDD, but to little/no avail, the above keeps on happening and it's really starting to piss me off. I think it could be that I didn't back up the EFI partition on the harddrive and just let the system create its own. Does anybody have any tips?

    It's one of the early ATV's from back when they were $500 a piece. And yes, I spent about $500 on this thing. I want to make it worth my while. D:

    go to http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page

    Read the wiki and check the forums. You will find the information required to recover if you have backups.

    If you need to reformat and don't have an Intel OSX computer, then see http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/ for information on creating the proper partition formats using Linux.

    There is no generic recipe to fit all situations. It all depends on what you did wrong.

    But see, I know what I did wrong. I repartitioned the disk. I've spent all of the last two days' worth of free time (which is quite a lot) trying to fix this. In the end, all I need is the EFI image. 34 MB. That's all. Is there any way to get my hands on said image?

    What do you mean the EFI image?

    Just create a proper EFI partition and make sure the MBR is GPT compatible. The EFI partition on the AppleTV is empty and runs from sector 40 to sector 69671. If created under OSX, the MBR will be proper. If created under Linux you need to use a recent gptsync from refit and it will fixup the MBR.

    Hijacking a thread is frowned at, please start a new thread next time.

    User differences, Video content differences, programming differences. Your question is vague and would take several pages to answer in full which I'm not going to do.

    Go to http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/, search there for plugins. There is lots of info about the differences in the wiki and forums but you're going to have to search for what you are looking for unless you can be much more specific.

    I checked my original disk images, the kernel prelink is the same size so a prelink from the update should work.

    The recovery partition has the following files
    Code:
    davilla@mythbuntu-710:~$ ls -l src
    total 209128
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root    298800 2007-02-16 21:43 boot.efi
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root     45590 2007-02-16 21:37 BootLogo.png
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root   80       520 2007-03-15 00:56 com.apple.Boot.plist
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root   80      1024 2007-03-15 00:57 Desktop DB
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root   80         2 2007-03-15 00:57 Desktop DF
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root   6306364 2007-03-15 00:44 mach_kernel.prelink
    -rw-rw-r-- 1 root   80 207475830 2007-03-15 00:50 OS.dmg
    com.apple.Boot.plist contains the following
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
            <key>Background Color</key>
            <integer>0</integer>
            <key>Boot Fail Logo</key>
            <string></string>
            <key>Boot Logo</key>
            <string>BootLogo.png</string>
            <key>Kernel</key>
            <string>mach_kernel</string>
            <key>Kernel Cache</key>
            <string>mach_kernel.prelink</string>
            <key>Kernel Flags</key>
            <string>rp=file:///OS.dmg</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    With this info you should be able to recreate a r1.1 version of the AppleTV OS from scratch using this update download.

    http://mesu.apple.com/data/OS/061-29...94-5248-45.dmg

    good luck.
