I bought a refurb 40gb appletv about 2 month ago. Upgraded to 3.0.1 and ran the patch stick. I installed Nitotv and everything ran fine. The other day i turned on my appletv and because of the lag booting up accidentally upgraded to 3.0.2. My Nitotv has disappeared. I cannot seem to find much info on compatibility with 3.0.2. I am wondering if i need to run the patch stick again and if anyone has any info on the compatibility with Nitotv and boxee on 3.0.2
The launcher for xbmc/boxee will work but you need the latest testing version. See this post for details http://www.hackint0sh.org/f98/111143.htm#post495845
As for nitoTV, it has basic support for 3.0.2 - see AppleTV OS 3.0.2 - AwkwardTV (see the Notes section)

"Apple TV Software update 3.0.2 includes fixes for Genius playlists, MobileMe gallery photos, iTunes U content, Internet Radio, and other media-related features. The update also includes performance and connectivity fixes for Apple TV."
Short answer is Yes, you will probably loose some functionality too but nothing huge
I am afraid of updating because I am not sure what I will loose as my menu system rocks with 3 new menu items, launcher, launchmore! and nito.
Got a broadcom crystalHD card on its way and will want to do a full disk image before installing that and updating to 3.0.2.
I am happy with it as is but want the network fixes, Ideally I would just like to test ATV flash and see if it's the magic bullet. If it does everything that patchstick.ca (free) does... allowing ability to hide and show menu items + nito and launcher then I will be happy. I want launcher or XBMC to always be my first click option for less remote presses to get XBMC running.
it would be sweet if someone created a menu editor or tutorial!
As I have already responded, launcher and nito have limited support for 3.0.2 in the latest versions of both.
Because 3.0.2 is a minor update, most things will likely work.
I don't think a backup is necessary, you can always do a factory restore if things go wrong with the Broadcom card. I installed one of these a couple of weeks ago and had no problems at all. The Broadcom driver can be unloaded quite easily via nitoTV's "Kernel Extension Manager"
Be aware that the crystal HD requires that you use SVN nightly (daily snapshot builds) of XBMC and these go up and down in terms of performance with the CrystalHD decoding as bugs are fixed and new functionality introduces new bugs.
This post tracks the status of known bugs with CrystalHD CrystalHD Status - XBMC Community Forum
To be very clear. You won't get any support for ATV Flash on this forum, the programs it distributes are generally free and the authors don't want people to think they have to pay for these programs.
You can reorganise menu items via the free "Software Menu"

Basically I just want to play it safe. The reason for doing a backup is only to safeguard my current install that I am pretty happy with but a few more apps would be good. I am not in a hurry to get the crystal HD installed as I don't really watch that much really HD content. It was just a cheap and nifty upgrade since I do not use the wifi!. Happy to just take my time and have some fun with it. Even happy to wait for the next RC to use it. There was a launcher update, have not looked what it does but assume it's 3.0.2 related. I just hope to get to the stage where I am as comfortable modding this as I was with my old xbox... thats more an issue of not knowing enough about apple in general so if there are any guides to that out there that would be a great read for me.
Thanks again
