Angry AppleTV - installing OS X 10.4.11 - Keyboard error?

    hello group

I am working on an appleTV trying to install OS X on a secondary harddrive (I'm not touching the original harddrive so that I can guarantee I wont brick the machine and my secondary one is larger anyway) I unfortunately dont have a Mac to install it with, so I'm using an old P4 PC that has run OS X86 fairly smooth (albeit a tad slow) but is currently only running xp. I am having no trouble installing to the drive using a USB connection to the PC, and the appleTV even boots into GUI when I attach it to IDE and fire it up... but I think the USB connection is dead, because it wont recognize any keyboard I attach to it. Hence, it sticks at "There is no keyboard attached. Before we continue, please attach a keyboard" as soon as GUI loads. Thats where I'm stuck. I am a bit skiddish with risking the data on my pc so I dont plan to install Tiger on it... nor do I have another 3.5 harddrive to play with. Any ideas how I could check to see if the USB is for sure working? How can I fix it? I'm not a mac expert so please speak keep it simple haha

I have MACDRIVE and the full untouched AppleTV drive with 2.0.2 software FYI

    Caleb

P.S. If somebody would be willing to share a disk image of their atv harddrive running Tiger I'd be eternally grateful

I dont know why but I installed 10.4.11 to the old desktop and copied the IOUSBFamily.kext from my desktop onto the aTV drive (overwriting the old one) and it worked. Not sure why...

So, there's somebody alive, who still wants to install osx on his apple tv, instead of me :] I have some questions: So... it will work with 10.4.11? and not just the 10.4.8? Hmm it's cool then, coz some apps require min 10.4.10. And Can you update right from the apple tv? So it's fully functional? What about the audio? (i read that the audio doesn't work) Does the wifi work? And one more question: How did you install the normal osx from a pc??? As i know, it can only be installed from an intel mac. Or is there any way to install it from the osx86 system? (for example run the installer script)

Pls reply, i wanna buy an apple tv just for that ) i love macs but they're too expensive for me, and now here is the apple tv wich is a stripped down mac, and pretty cheap for me, and it can be made very easily to a mac.

Sorry for the lot of questions. Pls reply! Ty!

I almost gave up on this project, but today I FINALLY got the display working! QE/CI everything thru hdmi! I am running 10.4.11 on mine, works perfectly. I have yet to try an update from Apple though. On my desktop the updates work fine (old P4 1.6ghz machine). To install, I had to actually install os x86 onto the pc. For some reason when I first started working with this it would boot fine but it would not find the USB keyboard. Dont know why, but copied IOUSBFamily.kext from the desktop, deleted the old one, and it worked fine. For Video, ran the Titan installer and edited the kext files according to the directions posted elseware on this forum. The custom NATIT installer is MIA, and no one wants to share it... Heads up - mine does not work with component, only HDMI - and HDMI is tricky. After it boots, the screen will go black. Unplug and re-plug the HDMI, you get about 5-6 seconds to put it to sleep before it goes black again. Unplug, replug. Wake from sleep, and should stay on. Again, dont know why. I'm not a hacker or expert like some of the other people here but I was on my own doing EVERYTHING with this machine. NOBODY replied to a single post, so forgive me for lack of explanation. Audio is the current project... there are some instructions out there though - use google. Be warned, this thing is not a supercomputer, so dont get all excited thinking you'll attach a blu-ray drive to it. Its for LIGHT DUTY!!!!! I'm typing this post on it now, and the keyboard lags about 10ms behind my fingers with 4 tabs open. But, its BEAUTIFUL on my 42" Panasonic Plasma BTW for ethernet you'll need the realtek 8139 drivers. Google is your friend.

    Good luck!

    Fist, thanks for your reply

So, everything is laggy, or just the browser, if you've opened 4 tabs? What about youtube? Is it also laggy? (i think yes, because 256mb ram is really not that powerful) I think you can get the audio to work, with a cheap $20 usb sound card. That should work. Can you run basic stuff on it(example: Mail)? does every pre installed program work? Is it better then a G3? If yes, then i'm gonna get one its cheap, its small, its light, its running very quiet, and if all the preinstalled stuff work, i could use it for browsing the web or word processing, or something like that.

And again, thanks for your reply! i hope if i get one, it wont be so difficult to get everything to work

    Default no mac expert

Cant say whether or not its better than a g3 or not... Everything I have thrown at it works so far. In a comparison, I have an old AMD Sempron machine I dropped a turion TL-28 into, and installed Windows XP64 (1gb ram, Nvidia Riva 2) and I must say the "Mac Micro" is MUCH more useful. Still havent worked out the sound issues, and my airport disappeared but I use wired anyway. I am going to download the 10.5.8 pre-patched appletv disc and see what happens with it now. This poor aTV has been sitting idle in a drawer for about 8 months now, and I am trying to find something useful for it. With the power rates in Alabama SKYROCKETING, I am about to use it as a desktop replacement for my barn (client contracts, shoutcast, torrent files, etc) as it will probably use 1/20th the power of the old dell P4 thats been doing its deeds out here. Using it for large torrent files will help me eliminate running my dual core HTPC 24/7 too. Thats probably $20-30 worth of power savings alone. When MAC supports Bluray (and i get a big ass harddrive to back up all my movies) I might try to swap it over too along with a nice drop in quad core.

Anybody know of a way to port PC Database programs to Leopard? I dont wanna push this poor thing to run an XP instance inside leopard or run bootcamp.
