Default AppleTV 3.0.2 on SDTV 4:3 Aspect Ratio

I have a 4:3 Standard Definition TV that supports composite and component inputs, but does not accept 480p input or settings to change the aspect ratio. I saw video about using an HDMI to DVI connector with a DVI to VGA connector to fool the AppleTV into outputting a composite signal and allowing 853x480 resolution, which displays at the correct aspect ratio os 4:3 TVs.

I have used nitoTV to install TVComposite.kext, and that works fine, but I don't really need that, since I can also do component input.

I have searched all over, but I can't find any recent mention of enabling 4:3 aspect ratio on AppleTV and I was wondering what the technical limitation is. I would love to get this working so I can use it on the secondary TV in the bedroom. It's frustrating to be so close and yet so far with the aspect ratio being the only thing that's not working properly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The cable trick works in 3.0.2, and then afterwards you can switch it back to component, keeping the aspect ratio from the composite output.

Basically, I just hook up one of the component signals to the Apple TV so it thinks it's got a composite connection during the HDMI/DVI cable trick, and it switches the Apple TV into composite mode, albeit at 16:9 aspect ratio. The screen is viewable, but obviously the colors are all wrong for component. Then I do the Menu/+ to set the resolution to 853x480i - 60Hz (which shows later as 1024x768i - 60Hz) again per the instructions to get it to 4:3 aspect ratio.

And then, a last step, I plug in all the component cables, wait a second, plug in the HDMI/DVI cable, wait a few seconds, and unplug the HDMI/DVI cable leaving the component cables plugged in. The resolution says, the aspect ratio stays, but the composite output gets turned off and it's returned to component output.

All a bit of a pain in the ass. Would like it to be automated somehow. I found some instructions using displayutil but all the links to the utility seem to be dead.
